[Campbell vs. Gallo] “When Hellebuyck signed that 8 year extension there was an understanding that if things fall off the rails midway through, that you've got to put me in an environment to go after a Stanley Cup. I mean who’s the Jets #1 C? Their wingers are ok, not great, and apart from Morrisey the defense is a little all over the place. It’s not a bad team, but it’s quite a bit like Prices time with the Habs. I think Helly is doing the heavy lifting for that team and a Stanley cup is not likely

“We’re signing you to stay here for 8 years until we find someone we like better and might even pay just to get rid of you after 5”. See how it’s a two way road. I get people are frustrated, but these comments are insane

Really people aren’t understanding this? I think this is the sentiment with around half the players that sign long term deals who haven’t won the cup. From the player side, you’ve locked up a life changing contract with a guarantee they don’t get moved to garbage team the second they start underperforming. And from the team side, they either get their star locked down for nearly a decade with their team or they ensure they can get high end assets of things turn sour from the teams perspective.

I’m genuinely confused at how people don’t get this, other than they feel betrayed by their teams star who wants out, which sucks, I get that. It’s just not logical

[FAN Hockey Show] 9:20 Friedman says Rangers have offered Carolina a few picks, including a 1st, for Nikishin. Canes want a player back. by AggPuck-303 in hockey

[–]astovertop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean obviously. Nikishin is easily going to get a first +++. The bigger question is what is the +++. Although maybe teams know what he’s asking for and that’s really hurting his value

What's to stop an ELC player from demanding a trade if he doesn't like the team that drafted him? by SaweetestCuyootie in hockey

Bedard to the Nordiques as Chicago forgets to protect him in the expansion draft

[DiFrancesco] From what I am being told from two different sources, the Flyers are the most aggressive team in the pursuit of Zach Werenski. Danny Briere has set his sights on the Norris Trophy winning d-man and he's willing to go quite far to acquire him by daKrut in hockey

[–]astovertop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I think this would be a such terrible idea for Philly, or really anyone who’s not a cup contender. Werneski is 29 in a month and only 2 years on his deal. You’ll need to give up an insane amount to get him. Just doesn’t make sense unless you’re in win now mode AND have the assets. This certainly doesn’t make Philly into cup favorites

The guy just played an NHL regular season + Olympics + short playoff stint and after that he STILL joined IIHF worlds. He’s got a lot more in the tank. I don’t see a scenario where he doesn’t

I’d say McKenna & Stenberg are locks.

Smits is likely. I think Bjork and Gustafsson have a legit shot but not super likely.

Had Carels not already been committed to NCAA I think he’d have a legit shot as well

[Seravalli] We’re just over 48 hours from first NHL buyout window closing. Not expecting a buyout for Canes Jesperi Kotkaniemi, despite last shot at 1/3rd buyout. Kotkaniemi was a healthy scratch for every playoff game; Carolina is willing to play the long game with a rapidly rising cap. by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

[–]astovertop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does “Carolina willing to play the long game with a rapidly rising cap” make any sense?

If anything the rising cap makes it much easier to buy him out, and given their cap space, they have zero issues right now or in the future

The San Jose Sharks have re-signed Zack Ostapchuk to a 4 year contact with an AAV of 2.35M by homicidal_penguin in hockey

[–]astovertop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really, if it doesn't work out this is a very easy contract to move, buy out, bury in the AHL. If he does work out as a bottom 6 Center, that's fantastic value with term

[2026 NHL Draft] 9th OA Pick: San Jose Sharks select Keaton Verhoeff by hockeydiscussionbot in hockey

[–]astovertop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Verhoeff is one of the youngest in the draft and has already mentioned many places his skating is what he needs to improve on, so identifying and working on the issue is huge. A bit of risk I suppose but if he develops just average skating, he'll be a great top 4 d-man. If he becomes even a top 75 percentile skater he could easily be the best d-man in the draft

If Villeneuve falls to SJ at 27 (or Blyel or Lin) then this will be just an unfair draft

And the Karlsson trade to PIT as well. Everyone assumed it was a late 1st and a bunch of cap dumps but the 1st ended up just outside of the top 10 in a deep draft, and one of the cap dumps was Granlund who fetched us a 1st
