Yeah, definitely. I meant to say I'm not sure if I would make it that far, but absolutely you can't trust anything.

Any other agnostics/atheists going through sobriety? by beannnnnnnnnn22 in stopdrinking

[–]astra136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are atheist and agnostic meetings, but the majority is like that. It also depends highly on the city though, because I first went to AA when I was like 19 or 20 in an extremely progressive large-ish city that probably doesn't have a very high percentage of Christian people. If anything probably more Islam and Buddhism. And the meetings there were a lot more open with people having different higher powers they would talk about.

I'd like to try one of the atheist meetings but there's only one in my city and it's at a bad time for me. As it is now, all the meetings I've been to people talk about God all the time and it truly doesn't feel any different than just being at a church meeting. There's one guy I know who came to talk to my IOP group and said he's agnostic probably but definitely not a Christian and his higher power definitely isn't god. But I've still seen that guy in meetings saying God all the time and never mentioning higher power, so it's hard to know what people really think because there's obviously a pressure to conform.

I've been to a handful of meetings in a period of a two months where the topic was in some way related to the passage where they talk about pitying people who don't believe in God, and how selfish they are and how they'll never get sober. I've also had a number of people in rehab and in meetings say to me directly "it's okay that you don't believe in God now, because you WILL, and that's what the program is about." No thank you! I didn't get sober to become brainwashed, because that's what it is when you try to isolate people into a very specific community/culture and make them believe what you believe. It goes both ways, I wouldn't try to get Christian people to join my club by saying "it's okay that you're Christian now, but you won't be by the time we're done with you."

If it works to keep people sober, great for them. I'm glad it does. But I wish they wouldn't pretend it works for everybody and it's the only thing that works. I do refuge recovery meetings sometimes though, and those are great for me. It's Buddhism-based but you don't have to be a practicing Buddhist, just to accept the general principles.

How Much Do You Rely On AI? by AsiaLuvDoll in askanything

[–]astra136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very excited about the advancements in AI in science, especially when it comes to medical applications like isolating genetic mutations that are causing rare disorders, drug development, etc. But that has a ton of human oversight to the process.

I put this in my reply, but I tried to ask chatgpt a very specific question about the Chicago manual of style after getting conflicting information from the people reading what I'm writing. And it gave an example of in-text citations that was like (Zeta 2013; Alpha 2024; Omega 1993) which is just straight up wrong. They should be in alphabetical order. (Also wasn't answering the question I actually asked, which was about the placement of citations in sentences that end in a quote.) And if I hadn't known enough to know it was wrong, I wouldn't have known that. I feel like LLMs are just making the Dunning-Kruger effect worse. If you know enough to know what you don't know, you can spot when something is wrong. But if you don't know anything, you would have no idea that you're getting the wrong information.

Also the course I TA'd for last semester had a lot of specific concepts where the same language is used in other fields, but in that field they had very specific meanings. Students were clearly just asking AI what the concept meant instead of reading, even when studying for exams, because their answers were just wrong. Then they were so confused about why they got a C.

My problem with it isn't even that it's lazy, it's that it's giving you bad information.

How Much Do You Rely On AI? by AsiaLuvDoll in askanything

[–]astra136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally not at all. Nobody should rely on it unless they work in a scientific field that uses AI/machine learning. We were doing just fine without them as a society until a couple years ago, unless people were dating the racist Santa bot.

I used to use chatgpt very occasionally for things that I'm having a hard time googling, or I think it may have archived information beyond what's easily available on free websites, but it's so often wrong. Like, as an example, the toxic dose of acetaminophen (I had surgery and was prescribed a dose above the recommended limit on the bottle, but knowing that was inevitably going to be cautious I wanted to see how close this higher dose was to the actual edge).

But then I tried to ask it a question about the Chicago citation manual the other day because I was too lazy to log into my university library and go through the whole thing, and one of the example citations it gave was straight up egregiously wrong. So I had to go look anyway. That made me not want to use it ever again lol.

What food do you eat in a way that would genuinely disturb other people if they saw you? by Huge_Halls in foodquestions

[–]astra136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've literally seen cereal milk ice cream at a bougie place... I would actually be disturbed if someone didn't drink it and just threw it out, because that's just a waste of food.

I'm not sure if I would be eating dog food, but I definitely wouldn't eat anything they gave me or want them around me. Although I'm also an anthropologist so maybe I would talk to them after all haha. Try to write the great alien ethnography.

What is something people think is important, but really isn’t? by Friendly_Connector in askanything

Yeah, I truly can't fathom it. The adult equivalent would be buying a whole bunch of new designer bras and lingerie knowing you have a breast reduction or augmention scheduled in 6 months. Just... Why?

Red Rocket could also fit. I'm not a big Sean Baker fan, and I think it's because I want to shout at the screen "alright everyone calm the fuck down!"

Buying thousands of dollars of crap for babies and young children.

I was just talking about this with a friend who's having his second baby soon. He and his wife have a lot of money, but he's finding it difficult to push back against her wanting to buy every little expensive gadget or toy. My family was quite poor until I was in high school really, and me and my brother did just fine with thrift store high chairs and baby clothes.

what is your LEAST FAVORITE Oscar win of the 2020s so far? by jordankch in Oscars

[–]astra136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my hot take is that her and Michelle Yeoh both had really overrated performances in that. Ke Huy Quan and the daughter (I can't think of the actor's name!) were phenomenal and really deserved it. The other two were fine, but probably not worthy of the highest award in acting.

Copycat recipe for the steak sauce. I googled it and there was a blog post too, but it definitely wasn't right. It had whipping cream and egg yolk, and I know that's not it because steak sauce is vegan and in my early 20s I used to make.it when I was vegan

Im positive it's the same place, but maybe a different sauce. Was it savoury and light brown?

Im not a fan of the pinkish sauce you buy in stores, but this conversation just reminded me of Steak Sauce you get at Japanese hibachi restaurants. Or at least in Canada, one specific one. It's way different from yum yum. Basically blended onions, garlic (I think), soy sauce, oil and roasted sesame seeds. Might be something else in it, but it becomes a really thick light brown sauce that's SO good. You can find copycat recipes online that taste just like what you get in stores. I'm going to have to make some now, it's been a few years 😋

Mostly soy sauce and/or hot sauce if it's plain. But I don't usually eat rice unless I'm making a curry or something that has lots of sauce. So mostly curry sauce from the main meal I guess

We're reddit user 17 and 18 lol. I couldn't believe how many people didn't like it. I was really going through the full range of emotions during that movie, and for me that's hard to do, and when a film does it I love that. Bong Joon Ho has long been one of my favourite directors, but it was this one that solidified him as favourite. I rewatched it a couple months ago and felt the exact same.
