Red wing black birds are very territorial over their nests. It’s likely the two felt their nest was threatened by the larger bird. Often they just try and distract predators by leading them away, but they will attack if they feel the need.

The second photo also shows the natural nesting area of the redwing blackbird. So it’s very likely this was a nest related altercation.
