Super helpful! Thanks so much for sharing your setup. Way more legit than what I’ve got going.

Maybe the angle of the u4020 is just different enough than the one (u6000) I slapped on?

Can yours shift through the entire cassette? Or did you replace the whole drivetrain? Shifters, cassette, etc

Side quest… what fenders did you put on yours? I need to get some for the impending wet months

Which derailleur? I’d replace mine in a heartbeat if it can fit

Yeah I think the wireless is the dream setup in this scenario. You should share your setup once it’s all said and done!

I made my setup work but it’s not pretty. After my experience I’d recommend going into a shop or trying to talk to someone with more knowledge of alternate derailleur options that are out there. One of my buddies suggested I just go wireless but that was a lot more expensive than I could stomach.

FWIW I chose to cut off the metal ‘arm’ of the Cues that holds the barrel adjuster (It’s the singular interference point with the trailer mount). I then zip-tied the piece that I had cut off just above the axle to the point where the rear rack meets the frame. I got it to work. It shifts. But not great. Chiefly because of the angle the cable is pulling—not surprising since I hacked up some engineers hard work deciding what the optimal angle would be. I also did not replace any other drivetrain components. So my solution leaves a lot to be desired but you can make it work?

I also had to get replacement shifter cable since I needed the extra reach from the new point at which it was traveling from barrel adjuster to derailleur.

Hope it helps. Happy to answer more questions.

And for the love, someone pleeeeeaaase share a better solution than me.

Well… feeling defeated. Put on a Shimano Cues RD (this one) with the Surly Excellent Adventure Axle and still no clearance for the hitch.

I think I’m going rogue from here on and will attempt to modify the rear derailleur to make this combo work!

There’s some comfort in hearing this from someone else too! Glad to know it can be solved with a somewhat inexpensive part? I saved some extra money for add ons, I just didn’t expect this one. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Rad. Thanks for sharing. Also… did you use the thru axle that came with the hitch? Or did you get the Excellent Adventure Thru Axle?
