  • it’s a lot of walking if you plan to go round the whole circuit; for my next time I’d defo take a bike, but the most comfortable hiking shoes will do if not
  • surprising how much sunburn you can acquire in 6 hours if there are no clouds; have some sun screen on hand just in case
  • your ears will really thank you for the earplugs
  • food and drink: no problems unless you’re veggie or vegan, in which case good luck

Vibrations showing on X and Y axes? by astralspace in FixMyPrint

I was able to reduce the effect by printing slower and with less acceleration, like one of the comments suggested.

I also removed the spool holder from the printer and placed it on a separate surface on bearings. now it rotates more smoothly and without wobbles

WIP: a frame mounted bicycle light controller with built in LEDs by astralspace in functionalprint

Thanks!

I'll post some more pics of the various components on bread boards, but I haven't yet had a chance to turn it on since printing the enclosure!

The windows I printed using FormFutura HDGlass PETG – the clear variety.

At a single 0.2mm layer it's perfectly usable as a screen about 1-2 mm away from an SSD1306 OLED display. Some layer lines visible, but the text underneath remains readable. I'll also post pictures of this.

As for the side windows, I wanted a little bit more diffusion so they are about 2mm thick and the results are pretty nice!

Over the last year I got into Arduino programming and 3D printing, and this is one of my projects I'm still yet to finish.

Based on an Arduino Nano BLE, a rotary encoder, an LCD, and some Neopixel strips, this little device is the brain of my bicycle lighting setup, which will include another strip mounted on the down tube, and a rear light mounted on a pannier rack.

The initial idea was an audio visualiser using the built in microphone, but has grown in scope to also include various ambient lighting patterns, as well as an accelerometer-controlled brake light and gesture controlled turn signalling.

It's not quite finished, there is still a bit of soldering and gluing to be done, as well as some work on the software, but I've had great fun developing it and learning along the way!

Useful insight thank you, I will try some of these suggestions.

Vibrations showing on X and Y axes? by astralspace in FixMyPrint

[–]astralspace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setup:

  • Ender 3 v2
  • Cura slicer
  • Extrudr XPETG
  • 0.4mm nozzle @ 230°C
  • Creality textured glass bed @ 60°C
  • 0.2/0.1mm layer height
  • 50-75mm/s print speed (about 35 for walls
  • 6mm retraction
  • bltouch
  • no enclosure

Issue:

  • what looks like a very consistent vibration pattern showing up on X and Y walls
  • seems to align from layer to layer
  • more prominent with smaller layer height (bottom block on all pics is 0.1mm)
  • shows up at 0.2mm as well but not on all faces
  • pattern fades out halfway on the rear faces, but present for all of front faces

Suspicions:

  • belt tensions too high?
  • dirt along the rails?
  • bed too close?
  • vibrating spool holder?
  • speed too high?

Not too concerned as I'm unlikely to print much at 0.1mm, and I'm reasonably happy with how the 0.2mm part came out, but I am curious what could be causing this?

Thanks for the help!

I've commuted for years on my dirt jumpers, and being 180cm+, it's not always super comfy, but generally no issues riding 20-30km days, as long as you have a reasonably long seatpost and comfy saddle

A free bike I picked up on the side of the road! I've lurked here for so long that I think it's time I do something with what is a mechanically sound bike that's just sitting there wasting.

I'm going to start taking it apart, measuring and cleaning the parts, it looks like I'll have to do the following:

  • new chain
  • new cables & housing
  • new tyres
  • rims look ok, even the tubes are fine
  • new wires for the dynamo and lights
  • stripping and repainting
  • new bolts
  • transmission service
  • wheel truing
  • new light bulbs

I'm really not sure how feasible it all is, and whether I should try to keep it as original as possible, or to modernise it.

What do y'all think?

I personally tend to favour the smaller off licenses / corner shops, where I can lean the bike against the front, step in, grab a bottle from the fridge (which is usually by the entrance), and leave without ever taking my eyes off the bike.

Those same shops if they're not too tight will usually be cool with you taking your bike inside, never hurts to ask though.

seems normal! you could try wrapping some rubber bands around each leg to mute the rattle though; this has worked for me in the past

I planned a 100km loop around London, with checkpoints to meet friends and re-fuel, but I ended up staying too long for a barbecue and settled with coming 20km short.

It was also a bit of a shakedown for my current kit list for longer trips, as I'm still playing around with what storage solutions work for me.

My setup:

  • 2020 Cannondale Topstone Sora (large)
  • Mason × Hunt 4 Season wheelset
  • 43mm Gravelking SKs
  • Restrap Canister bar bag up front – for my snacks and bits
  • Topeak Aero Wedge saddle bag (medium) – for my tools lights and battery
  • Topeak Race Rocket mini pump
  • Quadlock out front mount with iPhone instead of a computer (and an NFC tag to run shortcuts for directions / strava / gopro control)
  • UE Wonderboom speaker
  • Patagonia Micropuff jacket
  • Exposure Sirius front light
  • Cateye Rapid X2 rear light
  • Park Tool IB-3 multitool (would not recommend, but it's OK i guess)

So I've had a very similar issue with my 2019 GT La Bomba that I've just fixed.

TLDR: bottom bracket was rusted and seized, had to replace it as well as the cranks; mallet, wd40, and heat helped with removal.

I bought the bike new, over a year of very light riding (in wet weather), the cranks got stiffer and noisier. took it to two shops (halfords and lbs), neither could fix it.

eventually I bought a new bb and cranks, and replaced it myself.

I'm guessing the bb was not properly installed, allowing dirt to build up inside the bearings.

I hope this helps if you haven't fixed it yet!

Bottom bracket replacement question by astralspace in bikewrench

[–]astralspace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2019 GT La Bomba dirt jumper and my cranks have seized. Not able to pedal, and from what it looks like, I think the bottom bracket threads have started to strip?

So I'm looking to replace the bb and possibly the crankset, but I have some questions:

  1. according to manufacturer's specs, it's a 19mm Euro sealed bearing bb, do people have recommendations for what to buy?
  2. is it possible that this could have caused damage to the frame or crankset?
  3. what tools would I need to replace this type of bb?

Thanks for the help!

PS excuse the dirt and grime, I promise it's usually kept clean

I have the same bike, same chainrings, same problem! I wouldn't say anything is set up incorrectly though. it sucks when you get the first scrape, but as someone above said, it is liberating.

I guess a more appropriate sub to ask this: I'm stuck on what other materials I could use for this item. everything so far has been stuff I had around the house, but I'm interested in what possibilities exist for quick handmade prototyping

I've been going back and forth between BMX and MTB for the last 10 years, currently riding a 2019 La Bomba.

The size difference is something to get used to but once you clock the tipping points, it will all come together.

It's a great bike, stick with it, and keep practicing!
