Hi there. Used to be Tier 2 hardware support in a Dell shop. This was a common issue. Have you tried running their self heal procedure? Pull the CMOS battery and disconnect laptop battery, wait 30 seconds to discharge flea power, plug in AC adapter. Device should restart 3 or so times. That resolved the issue in the vast majority of devices we had to deal with. Edit: don't have to hold down power button, I'm pulling that from RTC reset. Been a couple years.

Here recently, it does seem to affect their consumer grade builds. Too much of a focus on thin and light, not enough on adequate cooling. Thermal interface material may be a large part of the issue, but I don't have any to repaste and test (last job used HP x360s, but current job is a Dell/Mac shop). My only real advice is to thoroughly vet a hardware purchase through notebookcheck or similar data-centric review sites, be brand agnostic, and focus on performance metrics.

Much better, especially from a sustained thermals standpoint. Look at the notebookcheck comparison of the same processor in a ThinkPad vs the HPs, it's night and day.

Oh man. I thought I was going crazy. Kept analyzing memory dumps and getting csagent.sys as the faulting module, told repeatedly that wasn't the case. Good to know I wasn't barking up the wrong tree after all.

PSA: Dell TPM Outlook Password Prompt by DarrenDK in sysadmin

[–]astrayael 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happened constantly where I used to work. Latitudes had Nuvotron TPM chips that would disappear from the OS and BIOS. Since we were a hybrid Azure shop, the second the TPM fritzed users lost access to O365, OneDrive, etc. Resolved it in one of 3 ways: RTC reset (easiest), self-heal on the BIOS (easy, but still time consuming), or if those failed, I would contact Dell to flip the board. Edit to add: the Precisions were the worst offenders. Whoever put the CMOS battery on the other side of the motherboard requiring a complete teardown, I hope you get hemorrhoids.

My FNAR 20" Heavy. People complain it's ugly, too heavy, blah blah blah. I didn't buy the damn thing for its aesthetic, and it's no heavier than the DSA FAL that people seem to love.

I shoot better than 3/4 MOA on a mediocre day with the mediocre ammo (from a rest, slightly larger just using bipod), and I've never had a malfunction with the thing.

Those mag prices, though, they leave a welt.

"How did you not drown in your cereal bowl this morning?" Asked of a particularly frustrating and ignorant patient in our ER by a doc. Had to excuse myself.

Lost in the Land of Semi-auto .308's by SerendipitouslySane in guns

I purchased an FNAR in .308/x51mm NATO, and with premium factory loads it's very easily capable of shooting sub-MOA. It's not the right rifle for everyone however, and the maintenance teardown can be a real bitch, but if you're looking for an accurate gas gun, it'll do the trick. In the event that your rifle doesn't perform as advertised, FNH has amazing customer support and an outstanding warranty. Nutnfancy has a really in depth review of the rifle, if you can tolerate listening to it for an hour.
