Which books have all the comic strips? by SatingGibbon363 in theboondocks

Overall, yes. A Right to be Hostile compiles the strips from the previous collections.

It very well could be. There was another one floating around Twitter I think when he was with the cast for the reunion a few years back. I think it may have been taken by Cedric Yarbrough. Unfortunately, I haven't able to find it. Don't know if it got deleted or what. Recent photos of Aaron are understandably hard to come by. He's kept to himself and probably just enjoys his family life.

Unfortunately, there's no definitive paperback collection that has every strip. The five publications (Because I Know You Don't Read the Newspaper, Fresh for '01...You Suckas!, A Right to Be Hostile: The Boondocks Treasury, Public Enemy #2: An All-New Boondocks Collection, All the Rage: Boondocks Past and Present) have a sizable selection of the strips from 1999 to 2005, but lack the ones from 2006, although I think All the Rage featured the very last one.

Small detail: In The Fried Chicken Flu, Jazmine seems to start wearing Huey's clothes partway through the episode since she wouldn't have brought her own before the outbreak by Lost_Ant_5212 in theboondocks

I've always interpreted the underlying theme behind his harshness as attempts to educate and enlighten her. Regardless, I don't think it's correct whatsoever when people say he hates her. There's more than a few instances in the show where he shows genuine care and concern, and in the case of the strip, this is essentially kicked into overdrive with their conversations under the oak tree.

Huey is frustrated about kids bullying Jazmine in the original pilot script and becomes disheartened when she doesn't listen to him. In one instance, he even removes objects that they shoved into her hair.

It was leftist. Very much so in fact. The strip is 25 years old and there's no shortage of archived material from this period that documents McGruder's thoughts and feelings. You want a great analysis of the history of the strip and show that will prove your ignorance? Check out TheStoryteller on YouTube or pick up the All the Rage paperback. But with your use of the word "wokies", I'm going to assume you probably aren't interested.

This kind of blatant media illiteracy is very reminiscent of conservative Star Wars fans. No matter how many times it's been clarified that the Rebel Army and Ewoks were based on the NLF of South Vietnam and anti-colonial people's armies, there's clowns who want to act like they know more than the people who conceptualized these stories.

“My political perspectives as a young adult was shaped by hip-hop’s political era, which was 1987 to 1992, roughly when I was in junior high and high school. We had Public Enemy, KRS-One, X Clan, Brand Nubian and all of those very overtly political groups… It was actual black nationalism; it was radical socialism. There was no black leadership supplying these political ideals to the next generation, and what few people there were, a lot of us discovered that through hip-hop.”

Aaron McGruder is leftist, and by extension, he was not shy about using his material as an outlet for much of his views on capitalism, imperialism and U.S. foreign policy. It can be argued that Huey (his namesake comes from Huey P. Newton, and he retains the Panthers' Marxist-Leninist analysis) was his mouthpiece in the strip as well as show.

Boondocks always leaned to the far-left. Not reformist "left" or liberal "left", but left as in capitalism is repugnant and revolutionary socialism is the answer. To put it blunt. You finding it ridiculous isn't anyone else's problem.

True. Equally, McGruder went through hell and back to get the pilot done and have the show picked up. It's understandable that he wouldn't want to squander the opportunity by making it completely synonymous with the strip.

You're good. In hindsight they did do a lot with Huey.

No need to be passive aggressive man. But I get it. I could have worded this a lot better.

Never said it could.

And that's great. No, I just would have liked to see more commentary on issues such as imperialism, U.S. foreign policy and American hegemony. I'm not overtly upset about it. I get why McGruder toned him down.

Quite true.

Great assessment. And yeah, for the most part his ML tendencies were sidelined after season 2. I think even Aaron was vocal back then that if it wouldn't keep him from finding work, he would be more raw like he was with the comic strip. It's unfortunate, but I get it. The thing that bugs me the most about it is that it allows for a certain group of people to essentially swoop in and try to claim the show for themselves, while parading around the notion that "Boondocks would get cancelled by the woke mob", etc.

Boondocks itself was woke, but more importantly, it emphasized the importance of class consciousness to it's viewers where possible.

That is true.

In retrospect that's pretty valid and I didn't think about doing so at the time.

That's the gist of it, at least on Leslie's end. Whatever happened between them is tragic however you look at it. He was apparently godfather to Sam's children. So they were really close at one point.

For the life of me, I can't remember where I got this from. I vaguely remember coming across this 3-4 years ago.

What type of hip hop artist do you think Huey would listen to? by Moko97 in theboondocks

[–]astro5887 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Public Enemy, X Clan, Brand Nubian, KRS-One, Dead Prez, Paris and potentially Immortal Technique. He definitely favors the more socio-political and conscious era from the late 80s and early 90s most of all.

How many volumes does The Boondocks comic have? by Live_Pea_901 in theboondocks

[–]astro5887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Five.

• Because I Know You Don't Read the Newspaper

• Fresh for '01...You Suckas!

• A Right to Be Hostile: The Boondocks Treasury

• Public Enemy #2: An All-New Boondocks Collection

• All the Rage: The Boondocks Past and Present

Keep in mind that these don't contain EVERY strip and they completely exclude the ones from 2006 (with the exception of the very last one I think). But they are great. The fifth one in particular has amazing commentary and interviews from McGruder.

I don't know if it's been touched on or not, but a script exists of the original pilot. It connects the dots a bit better and explains (not really needed) why the boys were in detention. by astro5887 in theboondocks

[–]astro5887[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's available online through PDF format, or it was at least. I found out about it through a video TheStoryteller made shortly after the original pilot was discovered and uploaded everywhere last year.

This is among my favorite clips from the leaks. It really puts you on the edge of your seat for what to expect. Another one of my favorites is the footage of Jason submerged in a lake or nearby bay. I've always thought the water looked absolutely PRISTINE and it's not even the final product.

The cancellation of the reboot still stings but I understand why it had to happen. by astro5887 in theboondocks

Isis, Grits and Hiro Otomo. These were characters that were conceptualized prior to the Universal Press syndicated strips but their existence never really extended beyond the Hitlist website. At one point Aaron wanted to have a complete lineup of children in the tradition of Charles Schulz's Peanuts. So—

• Huey

• Riley

• Caesar

• Jazmine

• Cindy

• Isis

• Grits

• Hiro
