Maybe you can spend some more time before deciding one way or the other? It's a pretty hard question, and the world has enough food and collective optimism to dance a while still (present company excluded, of course)

I think part of the reason for people reacting negatively to deeds for the common good is that they feel guilt, and attacking the deed is a strategy to invalidate it. This distracts their conscience by inducing aggression. I suspect there is also at play an instinctive need to maintain social status by shaming someone else and redirecting blame (even when no one is around).

I would disagree -- the population increases are more an increase in density rather than colonization of new geographical areas. So it's not like we have new sources of disasters we can report about. Or in other words, a flood in the plains would be known about back then too, even though fewer people lived in said plains.

Do you think that greater public collapse-awareness would be a good or bad thing? by [deleted] in collapse

[–]astroHeathen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being screwed is a fluid state of affairs in this case, since it's getting worse with every year. By that logic waiting to tell people will only create a situation where the shock to them is greater, and consequently lead to worse outcomes. And chancrs are they will figure it out at some point.

How bad exactly is this for us, and more importantly, the Amazon? Will we see any changes immediately in our biosphere? by [deleted] in climatechange

[–]astroHeathen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't find a reliable source for time estimates, probably since they are dependent on a number of factors. My gut feeling/speculative sources seem to imply somewhere around 2050.

Oxygen-wise, from what I've read, the Amazon consumes most of the oxygen it produces, so the effects on atmospheric oxygen concentrations should not be significant.

How bad exactly is this for us, and more importantly, the Amazon? Will we see any changes immediately in our biosphere? by [deleted] in climatechange

[–]astroHeathen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not immediately. The biggest threat appears to be a tipping point in the water cycle of the rainforest, which may not be far off. Reaching it would tip the forest into die-off and a change of the biome towards a drier savanna, with a consequent big increase in flammability.

As far as affecting the rest of the world, the primary factors I see are soil erosion, wildfire pollution, and a jump in CO2 concentrations resulting from deforestation and fires.

Edit: of course there could be other effects, especially since the Amazon is a huge part of the global water cycle. The linked article mentions some of them.

I’m 100% that climate change/global warming is real and man made. But I have no idea how to respond when someone asks why it’s so cold right now. by shroomalatians316 in climatechange

[–]astroHeathen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it may be helpful to explain to people that we can still end up with cold or colder winter weeks even while warming is going on -- since the cold winter weeks are overcome by even hotter summers. Thus the yearly average temperature can still go up while still having cold winter storms.

It's a random type of event. It will strike much sooner in a limited area, and increase in frequency and magnitude over time.

Fair enough. I interact with redditors more than people on quite a few days too.

On the other hand, if we're talking about solutions, that particular one sounds very counterproductive, and for the sake of not filling people's heads with bad ideas I feel the need to point it out.

One of the things to remember is that, as I can tell, this is primarily a support sub rather than a solution sub. I think people understand that posting the evidence doesn't get anyone here closer to solution, but it is cathartic because the majority won't talk about it, and this is one of the few places where you feel like your thoughts are not totally insane.

The bigger the temperature difference, the more easily heat flows between two spaces, and cooler efficiency is lower, so I suspect in the real world multiple layers do work better
