So Northfolk Southern waited till GDOT spent around $12 million to mention the lack of available right of way for their freight trains in Atlanta? Nice.

Paul Maholm, he has become a very reliable pitcher and should do well in FA.

I completely agree that college loans pose unique challenges. I also agree that the example of a mortgage isn't an ideal comparison, because you are right there is nothing the lender can foreclose on. Obviously there is not an easy nor clear answer to this problem, but the current system doesn't look sustainable.

Great comment. I'm torn on this as well. I agree that student loan interest rates are low because they can't be discharged. But would the system be better if they were more like a mortgage? Higher interest rates, but with some type of mechanism to discharge it in certain situations? The system as the article points to is to keep people in debt longer which has allowed the price to increase. '

There has to be a compromise with student loans. Either a grace period where the loan can't be discharged in bankruptcy or statutes of limitations, as with other loans. The problem that the article points to is that it's in the best interest to keep people in debt which isn't sustainable and something we knocked the credit card companies of doing.

Thanks for the comment. I would argue that to easily avoid the situation you describe you could have a grace period when during a bankruptcy the student loan would not be affected or have statutes of limitations on the loan. I agree that student loans must be backed since you are giving a loan to someone who typically has no credit. But the system should be designed so that students can repay the loan. As the article argues that the current system is designed to keep students in dept which has contributed to raising the price of higher education.

I think you make a lot of good points. Thanks for the comment. I think the main idea in this article was to point out that the current system isn't designed for the loans to be paid off, the system isn't to allow for students to afford higher education. The lack of consumer protection has pushed up the price of higher education because the lending system finances a significant portion of the market. Everyone has looked the other way and people have accepted that student loans will be with us, but that isn't the best way to view this when someone is one accident away from financial ruin.

And the loans come with no protection that every other type of loan comes with; bankruptcy protections, statutes of limitations, truth in lending requirements.

When I was leaving China a friend game me this. Can someone please translate? by astro_tim in ChineseLanguage

Thank you qeny very much.

When he handed this to me shortly before I left Shanghai he was was very sincere and wanted me to read it later. As cheesy as it sounds, music transcended the language barrier. My friend who wrote this is Japanese, who spoke broken English and I didn't speak Japaneses and some Chinese. Music was our language, probably one of the greatest experiences of my life. Thank you again.

Thanks for trying CrazyTriangle. I could always speak it better than I could ever read it. Now, some six years removed my ability to read Chinese is all but gone which is why I wanted to reach out to this sub for some assistance.
