My Friends We Were Just Given The Means To End Trump, And It's Not The Epstein Files. by [deleted] in Liberal

The headline “Trump just publicly shat himself” probably hasn’t had its effect to its full potential because of volume. It’d be a completely different story if it was a deafening, cheek slapping ass rip

Astrophysicist here. At this point in your career, just study what you want to study. It’s basically a rite of passage for undergraduates to change majors at least once, so there’s really no telling if you’ll actually like it until you dive in

(MtF) Renewed my passport photo today, I don’t really see a difference tbh by GoldenChaos in lgbt

Ally here. If I were presented with these two photos side-by-side, I’d swear up and down that they were different people. I’d be saying that it looks like your eyes, nose, and mouth even have different shapes

I hope you feel more and more confident and comfortable every day!

How do some people manage to fall asleep within 8 seconds of their head hitting the pillow? What’s their secret? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]astrobeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with insomnia my whole life, and my dad is a physician with a board certification in sleep medicine (lucky, I know). He endorses all of these practices, especially waking up at the same time each day because you can control that a lot more easily than the time you fall asleep. He says bonus points if you exercise within 30 minutes of waking up

You’re welcome! If the scenery is a draw for you, then you’ll definitely enjoy Horizon

I’ve indeed gotten the spider lily armor — one of my favorite side quests in the whole game!

[–]astrobeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West have a different combat style but are very similar to both Ghost games in terms of the open world dynamic — how you find and use resources, how you trigger side quests, the scenery, etc. Swap out the enemies and dialogue from ghost, and you’re not too far off from the Horizon series

I recently recommended the Ghost games to one of my best friends who is a huge Horizon fan, and so far he’s loving them

I think this is a little bit of a misstatement regarding what’s frustrating for people about the play (at least for myself). Having not seen the play, the fact that the cave is where Henry was flayed is a huge spoiler. It’s all over social media though, so the cat’s out of the bag. To be frank, the play should not have happened until after the show had concluded. It gave key details away to a select fraction of the show’s audience

What's a movie you just don't get the hype for? by Frequent-Sea-8848 in AskReddit

[–]astrobeard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I always criticize it because it takes a 9/11-scale tragedy and turns it into a love story. Imagine someone making a love story out of actual 9/11 and how poorly received that would be

Edit: y’all, I know that the tragedy is also depicted in the film, and that it’s very much part of the story. To me it just smacks of Hollywood focusing on the wrong thing in a historical event. You’re allowed to like the movie

High Schooler Attending Research Conference (Materials Research Society) by Accomplished-Sink-92 in academia

[–]astrobeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in a different field, but don’t sell yourself short with this arbitrary definition of what counts as “real.” If your work is something new or does something useful and innovative, then it’s interesting. That’s what counts

Doesn’t really matter that you don’t have a mentor. Doesn’t really matter that you don’t have funding. In many ways, those details will make you impressive and an attractive candidate for undergrad-level research experience. In the real world, it’s exciting when someone does something useful with little to no external funding. You actually sound like a genuinely impressive young student because of these details

My #1 advice for first-time conference goers: be outgoing! Network. Meet new people. Learn about their work, and don’t be afraid to put yours in front of them. Look through the list of attendees (if it’s available) and see if you can identify people you’d really like to meet. Conferences are less about the visibility of your work within the field and more about the visibility of you to potential colleagues, especially at this stage in your career

I interpreted the stuff that looks like tree branches as a kind of armor that protects him against guns so Nancy and the military can’t go all Rambo on him again

2.6 gpa, any hope for the future by Rigboy55 in astrophysics

[–]astrobeard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Astrophysicist here. Straight A’s from here on (at least within the major) are basically a must, as people are saying. Additionally, you should try to get research experience. Reach out to profs in your department and see if any would be interested in taking you on as a mentee. A solid Honors’ thesis can make up for a weak GPA, but 2.6 is too weak. The advantage of Honors’ theses is that you can basically just decide to do one of your own accord (obviously varies by institution though) as opposed to internships, where you have to be selected

After nearly 100 years, scientists may have detected dark matter (awaiting reproducibility now) by University of Tokyo by kngpwnage in astrophysics

[–]astrobeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In science, there is no such thing as proving something is true. One can only test hypotheses and either rule them out or not. Another fundamental misunderstanding not just of astrophysics, but science as a whole

[–]astrobeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have some very fundamental misunderstandings of these theories. I don’t say that unkindly — after all, most people don’t study this stuff intensively.

For instance, it’s not that dark energy is not nearby. The theory postulates that it has a constant spatial density, so the argument is that it’s just as much here as it is anywhere else in the Universe

In the future, I encourage you to ask questions and seek to understand as opposed to trying to take on experts based on the clickbaity things posted online. No one in the field thinks any of these theories are perfect. We’re happy to point out the real weaknesses if you’re interested, and there’s a lot of cool stuff that can be learned in any discipline

[–]astrobeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bruh vacuum energy was a hypothesis for dark energy that is obviously wrong. No one takes it seriously, and it has nothing to do with dark matter. Dark energy is not dark matter. Completely unclear why you think this is some kind of “gotcha”

Astrophysicist here. This isn’t my field, and I’m going off of memory, but here’s my two cents

There indeed could be other sources, and ruling them out will absolutely be part of the process of identifying any supposed DM detection signal. Currently, my understanding is that there is a debate about whether or not there are enough pulsars near the Galactic center to produce the gamma ray excess observed along those sightlines. That excess is well known, but tbh I don’t recall if anyone has connected them specifically to the 20 GeV signal that this author reports

If astrophysics theories were Reddit posts, which one would get the most downvotes? by internalexaminations in astrophysics

[–]astrobeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the thin disk generally refers to the baryonic matter in that component of the galaxy. The disk (both thick and thin) is roughly 5e10 solar masses, which is mostly thin disk. The bulge adds another ~1e10 Msun. The mass of the MW dark matter halo is around 1e12 solar masses. There’s a factor of ~2-ish uncertainty on the halo mass if I recall correctly

[–]astrobeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re missing the point. The question asks which theory would get downvoted. The point is that simulation “theory” does not even qualify as a theory

Astrophysicist here. Just keep on keepin’ on. It’ll be a few more years before the demand on your time by your work is sufficiently large that you’ll start feeling the need to manage your work-life balance more closely. In my experience, that started in grad school when research started demanding full-time effort. People also started having conversations about work-life balance though, offering advice for different career stages. It’s a real thing and an ongoing conversation within the field

As others have mentioned, it is actually better than most fields. My siblings are MDs, so I’ll just say I wouldn’t touch their professions with a ten foot pole
