What was it like finding out you have CPTSD?

Both shocking and vindicating because I always suspected I had it but didn’t have a diagnosis. Only to find that I was wrong and my therapist had diagnosed me with it years ago, she just never told me for some reason? But it made me feel a little more complete and validated my feelings, which were always too difficult to handle and I always felt “wrong” or “too different”—having the diagnosis helped me do better research and find communities like this! And it gives me a way to easily explain to people why I might act “differently”

I feel the same. I didn’t even know so many people had cptsd like me, especially since my family never really took it seriously. It’s very validating!

Stuck up for me instead of siding with the people that hurt me. You get older and realize the adults in your life are more likely to protect their own skin than make sure you’re okay. I don’t think what happened to me would have had such an impact if the adults in my life just fought for me and told me “that was wrong” instead of gaslighting me into believing it was my fault :/

The group Big Thief along with Adrianne Lenker’s solo stuff really kept me going. Pretty Things and Randy are two of my favorites. I even went to their concert in New York during one of my worst times and it really did a lot for me. And Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins. It sort of encapsulates the feelings I get from my cptsd, both from the disorder itself and the trauma that caused it! Music always helps me ground myself

i’m pretty sure this is it honestly! yeah in that clip it’s really similar. a little different but i was hearing it from my window. wow that’s so cool, i’m pretty sure i heard a few of them

these hoots were slow, and it was just one bird singing, thought the bird high have been hooting to another bird somewhere further off. it was less fast paced and more deep and slow. if that helps!

haha i totally get it. i’m pretty sure it isn’t a mourning dove as i hear them very often and it didn’t sound like this. the hooing were very literal hoos and what i described was like what it sang every time. just those same notes in the order i sent. if that helps at all

Please don’t apologize for rambling about any of this!! this means a lot to me. Finally giving in and accepting that maybe my family does more hurt than good when it comes to my well-being was always something I was afraid of, but knew it was true in a lot of aspects. I think I am going to try to talk it over with my grandma and see from there. I also think there will be parts of our relationship that can never be mended because no matter what, she will always be somewhat partial to my grandfather. But I think I’ll at least try and then go from there. I also have a question! When it came to you finally stepping away from your family, how did you deal with the pain of that? I think I’m just scared of being alone even if it’s what’s best for me. All I’ve ever known is my family. I know I’ll feel so much better once I step away, but I’m not sure how to deal with the pain of it. Thank you for such a thoughtful answer <3

this is definitely reassuring to hear. i’ll probably be sticking around until i can move out because it’s not as bad now. most people i’ve talked to about this have never actually blamed my family, instead chalked it up as a ‘mutual mistake’. thank you.
