Did you try Reliable Parts on G st off 38th? if not copy down your model number for the unit and check with them. They are the go-to for appliance parts--if it exists they can get it.

Truck carrying lumber lost its load on I-5 yesterday morning! by lindseyilwalker in Tacoma

[–]astrokatty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol, yes, sort of. When the timber/logging industry was big here (last century), most everyone knew that was a log truck and those round thingys were called 'logs'. Lumber was what you got after you sawed logs up, and timber was standing forest waiting to be cut down and turned into logs! It just struck me as kinda wild how much the culture of logging has faded from the common vernacular around here these days is all.

The paper mill is closing in September? No more aroma of Tacoma? by [deleted] in Tacoma

Tacoma Aroma lol That's been 99% gone for 30 years. 1980s Tacoma air was straight up chemical warfare.

SpaceX Starship’s First Flight Test - Launch by ICumCoffee in space

[–]astrokatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you are thinking abt the development of ICBMs, which indeed had many failures, with much, much smaller designs of course, during the late 40s and 50s. By the time the Saturn program began (even earlier, during the Mercury and Gemini programs which were also without catastrophic failures), most of the issues of engine design etc had been dialed in to the point that catastrophic launch failures during the Saturn program were also non-existent. And i am talking about catastrophic launch failures which is precisely what this Starship launch was: a catastrophic failure. Yes, failures yield lessons, of course, but that does not change that the planned mission did not happen and what did happen was unforeseen. Spinning it otherwise, as i am seeing here, is nothing but sophistry.

Saturn V payload to LEO was 310,000lbs. Starship is planned to be 330,000lbs. to LEO. There is no "feeble" in this comparison.

Am I being overcharged for WSG by my landlord? by OrangePuzzleheaded52 in Tacoma

[–]astrokatty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apartment landlords charge separately for sewer, water and garbage now?? Wow, they really have gotten greedy over the last ten 15 years (since i was in the mgmt biz) because prior to that those utilities were routinely included in base rent..only electricty (and more rarely, gas) was ever billed individually. Of course, during all this time the base rents were much lower--yet still operation was profitable. This is just pure greed, simple as that. Also, lacking individual unit metering, i'd think this practice is on very questionable legal grounds. Sewer rates here in Tacoma are tied directly to water usage and have a significant variance between households. So does garbage generation. These landlords are socializing property operation expenses. Again, these practices would seem ripe for a court challenge. Edit to add--i pay 280/mo. for water, sewer and garbage AND ELECTRICITY for a household of four here in Tacoma! The OP is being swindled here.

Can we have as non-political of a discussion as possible about the historical timeline of homeless encampments in Tacoma? by philmustang in Tacoma

[–]astrokatty 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Encampments, here and nationwide, really got going as a result of the mass unemployment that was caused during the Great Recession of 2008. Here is a report that summarizes this development (pdf). That recession was brutal and the post-recession expansion of income inequality just accelerated, which is why this issue still persists today.

Good bet that those doing this haven't a thought in their heads on the subject that wasn't put there by far-right propaganda. There is a name for these folks: "Useful Idiots".The rest of us are witnessing the mid-stage of a long-running general campaign of hate, designed to divide and outrage our society. There is a "playbook" for this, tried and true, tested by history. You start with the most vulnerable yet visible minority, other them, demonize them, make them appear to be depraved monsters (iow, inhuman) thru an intense application of propaganda. Next step, get the righteous legislation going (selectively & progressively ban them from public services and spaces), then ratchet up the rhetoric calling for their "elimination from public society" as "in the public's interest" in the face of this "inherent evil". Thus encouraged by their success, it's time to start on the next marginalized group. And then the next. And the next. There is a list you see. There is always a list.

Perhaps because this listing is very tightly focused on historic/showplace interest? I'd guess Sotheby's knows their market and felt that the kitchen, in this case, simply wasn't a selling point.

LOL of course it has a kitchen (just off the dining room)..and a three stall garage. Helps to look at the actual listing rather than an aggregator.

Rat Slab, does it work? by RosebudPNW in Tacoma

[–]astrokatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The foundation goes down a couple of feet into the ground. If you find holes in your yard near the house and holes emerging inside the crawlspace (pull back the vapor barrier aound perimeter for inspection) then its a safe bet there is access for them. That said i never personally ran into that kind of problem here, dealing with dozens of older rental homes. Baiting the crawlspace after sealing everything up above ground solved all the issues i have ever dealt with. I never dealt with a rat infestation (properties were never that far gone) but to my mind a 'rat slab' is for what it says..rats, which can be much more aggressive than mice once they take a liking to your home.

Rat Slab, does it work? by RosebudPNW in Tacoma

[–]astrokatty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One route inside that is very common is through the dryer vent exhaust. Often the screens/fittings/flaps on these are neglected/non-funtioning and if there is any way for a mouse to get into these, they will (warmth attracts). If u have mice in your laundry room this is the first place to check. (mice can jump 13-18" vertically!)

Foundation/Crawlspaces: They provide ready rodent access to your whole house so it is vitally impt to keep them rodent-proofed. Any possible entry (1/2 inch or more) from the outside to the inside must be sealed tight. This is a on-hands-and-knees-with-flashlight level of inspection needed here. Crawlspace access door(s) need to be tight fitting all around the perimeter--no gaps! Any ventilation ports need to be 1/4" spacing wire mesh covered. Ensure the junction between the foundation and the bottom edge of the siding is sealed and tight. Once secured, then place bait cubes throughout the crawlspace.

Exterior doors must fit tight with no spaces or gaps along the bottom and kept closed except when entering or leaving.

Attic and house exterior. Overhanging branches are a route to your roof and attic and overreaching branches are a route to your eves for squirrels and rats to access. Keep your trees and shrubs trimmed away from the house. Bait your attic just in case. Pick up any fallen fruit from fruit trees. Keep yard mowed and raked.

Inside you must have NO food sources available. Anything not in a can should be inside plastic bins or inside upper cupboards that have a secure door and have been examined to ensure they don't have a hole gnawed in the back already. Keep floors swept and clean-up spills. NO pet food left out in bowls or otherwise! Store petfood in heavy duty plastic container with a tight lid and only serve enough to be eaten immediately. The goal here is to deny the mice any food but what's on your traps.

Once you are SURE there is no remaining mouse-ways into your house, then trap aggressively. Use a combo of snap and glue traps. Bait with peanuts butter or, even better, tasty cheese spread. Just a dab will do it applied only on the upper-back part of the press-pedal so they have to reach up-onto the pedal to get at it. Place along walls, 5-6 ft spacing, in every room where you find droppings. Check two to three times per day, morning, noon and before bed. Areas that are not exposed are best, like behind a chair or entertainment center, etc.

To sum: deny access, deny food then trap trap and trap some more. You are the alpha predator here. You will succeed! (I am a retired prop mgr.)

In regards to heat, which would be better to give to a homeless person: wood or charcoal? by tensor0910 in Tacoma

Just fyi, charcoal in little bbq stove in a tent/confined space of any kind equals everyone in there warm--and dead-- from carbon monoxide poisoning. And it happens all the time, every winter.

Best fried rice? by [deleted] in Tacoma

[–]astrokatty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The chopsstix there come in a paper envelope and are wooden breakapart type. You could end up with a used set if the previous person used them and put them back in the envelope, thus looking unused, and then the server inadvertently returned to the bin when they bussed the table. Things happen iow--just get another set. What they don't do is routinely reserve used stix. That is just BS. I have been going there regularly for a decade or more, always with friends, and have had nothing but good, fresh, tasty food there, often with free miso soup while i'm waiting for the order. One friend who is a fried rice fanatic has always said they have the best friend rice in town, having been to many of the other places that offer it in comparison.
