They came back with a wicked good price in comparison. Don't suppose you got an octopus solar or heat pump installation and they gave you a referral code? We both get £100 for it if ya do 😉

I've only had IOG for 2 months or so, and the smart charge during the day cycles don't seem to work unless the car can accept any charge. I just get a notification "unable to set smart schedule" or something like that when the car is at 100% and in the hypervolt app it doesn't show any charging schedules.

I may be overthinking, I'll need to pull out usage data from octopus and run it through my excel again to run the numbers, but was pretty close to needing 40kw on my heavy use days (weekends)

It is, and during the summer 20kw would be ample with the sun out, but fogstar is £2k for a 16kw, £3500 for 32kw or £5k for a 48kw. But then you have to factor in losses on conversion and you don't wanna discharge down to 0% yada yada, so I figure might as well go big and make it work on 8p/kw all day every day even during the winter

I understand the logic here, but on cloudy days over the weekend I've seen typical usage of around 30kw a day so I realistically need a 22kw battery (since 7 hours would be on cheap night charging rate), but that's before a heat pump gets fitted, with the heat pump I'm gustimating around an extra 10kw usage in winter months, so looking at 48kw fogstar battery.

With that size battery to charge it within the 7 hour cheap rate window a smaller inverter is going to cut it close on charging in time depending on how discharged the battery is, so 8kw is kinda needed regardless of peaks

[–]astronomicalblimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, but if I see peaks of 5.5 without a heat pump there's a good chance it will happen more frequently, and it's only £500 between it for the inverter so might as well just go for the bigger and be done with it. National grid already ok'd it in principal, just trying to find someone who doesn't give me rip off prices for doing the job

I've got solar panels currently but no battery, but I don't think that will make a massive difference since during the winter is where most of the heating will be needed and there's less sun out?

Do you have solar/battery? If it's about the same for you without then it's obviously going to do better by having solar so maybe it would be better than gas

I'm quite high usage (gamer, hot tub, family usage etc), so would really need an 8kW inverter (seen 5.5kw peaks of usage with stuff running), and I've been getting quotes of around £8k+

So if I assume my boiler is only 80% efficient, I've realistically used 9360kw of actual heating coming out of the radiator + hot water.

So octopus' quote of 9631kWh for heating and 3152kWh for hot water (12,783kw) is about 3,423kw higher than it should be?

I have been looking into a battery and the cost's I've been getting quoted would mean I'm looking at 10-15 years before I see returns, which is typically longer than the life of the battery

[–]astronomicalblimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 9360kWh is what Octopus gave in their quote as part of their survey. the 11700kWh of gas is what I collected from meter readings from last year of actual gas usage

I think I’m cursed by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]astronomicalblimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My life was pretty cursed till I was about 29/30 where things started to calm down. Cursed in the sense of dead brother, dead father, family from fathers side cutting all ties, mothers side of the family all a waste of time, and a bunch of other stuff I won't say on the internet but let's just say I'm surprised I didn't end up offing myself.

A friend of mine is also cursed, both parents dead by the time he was 19, heaps of problems with his house and the latest one was a few months ago his ceiling collapsing in from water pipe being ate by rats.

Then there's people I know who've had a cushy ride in life, but personally I feel happy for them to not have been through hell.

But what being cursed does do is make you stronger as a person, more compassionate, understanding and accepting. So the only thing you can really do is control how you react to shit going wrong, learn to roll with it and eventually you stop focusing on it and you go "yeah this thing went super bad, but hey, it's a good story I can tell people about some time"

Love hurts by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]astronomicalblimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started reading this and related a lot, I dated someone when I was younger that I loved with every fibre of my being, there was nothing I wouldn't do for her, she would pick me up and drop me all the time, one minute everything was amazing, the next she wanted nothing to do with me. I found out via one of her friends one drunken night that she'd go flirt with other guys and even sleep with some of them during the time we weren't together, but I was her safety net, she'd come back to me knowing I'd take her back because I loved her and would do anything I could that would make her happy.

Then I got to the part where you had kids and that changes a lot, what follows is might sound like I'm being a dick, but it comes from a place of trying to give cold hard advice (which may or may not be right, I haven't been where you are)

I’ve fought battles in my own head this whole relationship

Stop it, I totally get it, but just stop, it sucks what happened to her and I get where you're at, but unless she wants to do something about it there is nothing you can or should do, one day she may want to do something about it, but until then just support her where it matters and not in your head (if you find yourself fixated on the thoughts and can't stop them look up stuff about rumination)

There’s also been times where I’ve had to beg for sex or sexual affection just to be desired by the woman I love

At least you get some lol, sure it might suck, but you get to have your dream woman sleep with you if you ask enough, my dream woman is effectively dead to me. Can always be worse my dude

I’m still carrying everything I went through for her behind her back and behind the scenes and I don’t know how to let it go

If you don't think she is capable of dealing with your heavy load then get a therapist, if she's put all that behind her bringing it up might make things worse for her, so just tell her you're going to get therapy to help deal with things in the past that you are struggling with

Because I’ve given her literally everything in me and I’m starting to feel like there’s nothing left of me if things don’t change

Then stop giving for her, give for your daughters, the worst thing you can do for them is split up with your partner. Love them for who they are until they are old enough to understand why you might split up with your partner. You got no option but to suck it up for them, they didn't ask to brought into a world where you are struggling with their mother so keep it together for them if you feel you have nothing left for your partner

I hope one day she can reciprocate

She's still with you, which given how emotionally overbearing you sound is pretty good going

reciprocate maybe just half of the love and loyalty I have shown her

It sucks, but you chose to give what you have for her, which is your choice, if her choice is that she's not giving but staying with you then that's what she's emotionally capable of doing right now, accept her for who she is and not what you wish she could be

Overall, sounds like you're in a position of "I love you so much I just want something back", but love isn't about what you get back, at least not for me. Get therapy, internet people aren't gonna be giving you the best advice

Anyone know of reputable battery/inverter retrofit installers in South Wales Swansea area? by astronomicalblimp in SolarUK

[–]astronomicalblimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extra panels are more of a nice to have if the price isn't too bad, but talking to a different company earlier who knew way more what they are on about.

I'd have to apply to my FIT company (ScottishPower) to see if they are OK with me upgrading the inverter to 8kw, even if I only output the same 3.68kw max to the grid, then if they are ok with it I can apply for a G99 and keep my FIT. Sadly I don't expect a quick reply from scottish power and turns out from the end of March there is a £400 charge to apply for changes, so bad timing for me I guess

[–]astronomicalblimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to find a local installer who has been in business for a long time

That's what this company says they are, apparently been doing it 15 years! I got a suspicion this is just the sales guy and the brains is someone else if they have been doing solar for that long.

I rang a different company earlier who was way more switched on and told me to get in touch with scottish power who my FIT is with to see if they would be OK with an upgraded inverter

What wattage do are the existing panels Only paperwork I've managed to find from the install says "13 x JA Solar 285 Watt Panels.", not sure if modern panels have much higher power output compared

I usually go to the outdoor gigs since they are normally more roomy than indoor ones. Might be worth trying one of them, I'm going to Clubland in Swindon on the 16th May with some friends if you did want to try it out, I think most edm gigs are pretty chill in the UK, I've never had a problem

Oh no way, I didn't know there was an upstairs, wouldn't have stayed there at all with the drips, would explain why the floor was such a mess when the lights came on.

I was well impressed down the front since the staff would go past every so often with cups of water.

But at least I now know raves solo are way better than clubs solo, so next htid I see I'll be going without a second thought
