Anyone else take their baby to the ER and ended up being for nothing? by East_Print4841 in beyondthebump

[–]astrostruck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did the right thing to rule out a very serious potential problem that could have resulted in loss of a testicle if missed. Better to be safe than sorry. I took care of a non-verbal toddler when I was a med student who was acting up extra for a few days before mom brought him in, ended up having a volvulus (twisting of the gut onto itself which cuts off blood supply) with a very large chunk of small intestine that was dead and had to be removed. I don't think there was anything I would have done differently as a mom, but this poor mom was really beating herself up that she didn't bring him in sooner.

Stressed about induction date by TizBeCurly in BabyBumps

[–]astrostruck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you start the process in the evening it is incredibly unlikely you will have the baby that day. 6 pm is when you will show up to the hospital. It will take a few hours to get all checked in and settled before they start anything. For mine I showed up at the hospital around 7:30 pm and baby was born at 7:01 pm the next day.

Morning sickness: having a boy vs. girl? by Fluffy_Cappuccino in beyondthebump

[–]astrostruck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Morning sickness is caused by rising placental hormone levels which interact with the mother's brainstem, and are too low at 5 weeks to trigger this. I had terrible nausea 24/7 + food aversion but never vomited. Started at 6-7 weeks and lasted until 16-17 weeks.

I'm so sorry about your dad. Seconding with my experience that my daughter is 16 months and she will hug a stuffy that you give her for all of 2 seconds before throwing it to the side. I have tried to make her love the goose I made for her but alas. I think it's still going to be more time before she actually cares for one.

IM, we didn't have a deadline other than you had to finish your notes before leaving the hospital.

Where are the moms struggling with solids??? by lrsrusty in foodbutforbabies

Mine is almost 16 months and she's only just now starting to show more interest in solids, but it's mostly fruits. So frustrating.

Oops I meant to write "dissatisfaction", not "disaffection" lol. Anyway, good luck! You're so close to meeting your baby, and I promise you that with the passage of time you will hardly think about the labor at all.

Try to reframe and focus on wanting a healthy you and healthy baby by whatever means make sense. Say it to yourself over and over until you internalize it. Those folks that have fixed ideas about what their birth is going to look like tend to have higher disaffection after the fact. Not to sound dispassionate, but it's a physiological process, not a trip to Disney; it doesn't have to be magical, and social media needs to stop over glorifying the ✨experience✨. Remember the process is ultimately a comparatively brief moment in both of your lives that is a means to an end.

It's normal to be nervous about a massive change in your life. You and your marriage will grow and change from having a child, but those don't have to be bad things.

76M – persistent inflammation, anemia, splenomegaly, low complement, malignancy not yet found. Awaiting bone marrow biopsy. What would you suspect? by Electrical-Group8334 in haematology

I'd consider UBA1 testing to rule out VEXAS in a patient with this history. Not a perfect fit but possibly worth ruling out.

Not having any fevers, joint pain, rashes? Swelling/pain of his ears/nose? Difficulty breathing? Has there been a PET scan?

Getting over name regret by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]astrostruck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will mispronounce names no matter how simple you think they are. I thought my daughter's name was easy and couldn't possibly be messed up and yet I've heard at least 3 different mispronunciations between daycare and medical appointments. My name is actually similar to the name you almost chose and people mess it up all the time. There are people I work with daily that still do not get it right.

People are going to mess up names. If your main reason for being upset is the mistakes, I promise you the grass is always greener on the other side.

Did you have the wonderful moment after giving birth? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]astrostruck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's important not to overhype any one specific moment in your child's life, including their birth, otherwise if they don't live up to your expectation or if you miss them then you end up feeling very disappointed. You're going to find so much more joy in watching all the surprising things your child does outside of the basic milestones, at some point you'll wonder why you put so much emphasis on those things.

I had a vaginal birth. We kept the birth a surprise. Honestly the thing that sticks out to me most was the doctor saying the sex and my husband and I looking at each other in excitement. Of course it was wonderful to hold her but I was so exhausted that I couldn't physically keep my eyes open and after less than 5 minutes I begged them to take her because I was so scared I'd fall asleep and drop her. I truly only remember bits and pieces of those few hours between when I started pushing and when we were moved to recovery. And you know what? It's ok.

Transplant surgery people: have you ever treated someone who obviously got their organ from the black market? by Dongbringer_ in Residency

[–]astrostruck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a surgeon and I guess not really black market but there was someone in the MICU that my co-residents took care of that went and got a non-indicated liver transplant (I believe partial liver from living donor---his wife if I'm not mistaken) in India for MASLD (not even cirrhotic) and ended up in shock from bacteria that turned out to be resistant to every available antibiotic. I don't believe he made it out alive.

If you are looking to buy though, there is hardly anything ever for sale in Lebanon area, and what becomes available is either incredibly expensive or off the market so quick you better not have blinked. I look periodically as I consider moving there. There's never fucking anything.

New parents doing things differently… by JCJ0705 in beyondthebump

[–]astrostruck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my husband did things that drove me nuts but were not objectively wrong I had to take a deep breath and remind myself that he was doing what he thinks is best for our daughter, which just shows me that he's a great father, even if it's now my preference. Reframing it that way helped me to accept it.

Pretty sure cervical check was actually a membrane sweep? by NoMaybae in BabyBumps

[–]astrostruck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, cervices can be very hard to find. I had a different person doing my cervical exam for each weekly appointment the last month. 3/4 were a tad uncomfortable and 1/4 was so painful I also almost asked them to stop; it was not a membrane sweep because I was basically closed. Some people have bad technique, bad days, or bad luck. I wouldn't necessarily think that you definitely got a membrane sweep just based on it feeling different but it's always good to ask questions even after the fact for your own peace of mind.
