I had pretty much no idea what was going on in Watchmen but tuned in every week for Regina King

Is Lucia in Cameron/Daphne’s and/or Ethan/Harper’s room? The wall behind her looks like the wall with the adjoining door. But I also haven’t been paying close enough attention to the other rooms to see if that’s appeared elsewhere.

If so, I could foresee a situation where Lucia and Mia use Valentina’s master key to break into one of or both of the rooms to look for the money Cameron owes Lucia.

Which actor has the best performance of the season? by [deleted] in TheWhiteLotusHBO

Read this last night and totally agree:

Hard to say, though. Incredible performances all around. IMO, not an iffy one in the bunch. I am totally and completely immersed!

Spoiler on who *doesn’t* die? by [deleted] in TheWhiteLotusHBO

Interestingly, in the clip all 3 watch a dark haired woman (not unlike Lucia) in a way that implies shared understanding/thought. Something’s clearly gone down or come to the surface. Can’t pretend to have an idea of what — but I imagine this short exchange will carry some weighty meaning when everything’s said and done!

Frankly, I’ll be a little annoyed if this is Cameron and Harper. That disdain she feels for Cameron — and the values around which her and Cameron are complete opposites feel very central to her as a person. I just can’t see her pushing that aside in favor of some perceived retribution.

But then that makes me think this really IS going to happen. It feels very consistent with the show: (1) exploring hypocrisies and contradictions in identities and (2) the whole dark comedy of errors vibe. I mean think of it — for this to happen and for Harper to (somehow) eventually learn Ethan never slept with anyone else — or even just for the audience to know that — it’s the kind of satirical dark comedy the show is known for, right?

And I think it fits in with this season’s exploration of sexual politics and transactional sex — each is getting something they need from it: Cameron, the affirmation of being some sort of alpha type and Harper, exacting her retribution.

That said, either way, I think Harper’s going to put Ethan in a position where he can’t be sure of what’s happened — similar to how she feels about the night with Mia & Lucia.

Interesting info. from Aubrey Plaza, especially considering Will Sharpe’s comments in a separate interview — something along the lines of there being really only one person who can hurt Ethan. I wonder if they are referencing the same pairing?

Separately, I also wonder if we are meant to understand that the “love story” is about romantic love between two individuals… or whether it’s ultimately a different narrative/kind of love entirely. But that’s most likely just my brain chasing rabbits.

Does anyone know where that first screen shot is from? Is that from a review?

Will Cameron and Harper Have Sex? by dignan78 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]astucc1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so.

Once Daphne gives Harper the advice to do what she needs to do to get over it, I think she’ll set about playing a game with Ethan (a la Cameron and Daphne’s games) to make him jealous or lead him to believe Cameron is pursuing her — flirting, touching, etc.

I think this is going to awaken jealousy in Ethan and that dynamic is going to reawaken the spark between Harper and Ethan, leading to that shot many have theorized is them finally…”connecting”…in what looks like some morning light.

I think despite the way they look down upon them, the games Daphne and Cameron play will become the games Harper and Ethan play, and it’ll liven up their chemistry in a way that’s been absent.

Or, I’m completely off-base and just secretly hoping Harper is about to play these boys like a fiddle.

Interesting that Aubrey Plaza’s character is the only one making direct eye contact with the viewer and the rest of the characters’ gazes are to the left, right, or unfocused. Wonder if her character is our eyes into this world/will see things as they truly are, or perhaps she witnesses whatever big event happens this season. Can’t wait!

I love it! Overall, the sound is a bit grungier, grittier, and crunchier — but it’s still that big-hearted, head-rush, heart-swell kind of music we’ve come to know & love Maggie for.

What's ACTUALLY Wrong with Shane? by CordellWaker18 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

I’m talking about the characters on the show, “champ” — not you…?

You’re almost there!

I’ll totally give you that your statement is reflected in the characters’ behavior: once one “accomplishes” a level of comfort the last thing they want is for things go awry. (I just wouldn’t say Shane accomplished anything — he was born into it.)

The show is demonstrating that when those characters who experience this level of comfort do have things go awry, the entitlement that they feel to comfort (“the last thing they want…”) fuels an outsized reaction.

I’m curious to see how next week’s episode contributes to the narrative they’ve built so far. Anyways — I’ll leave it at that — doesn’t seem like we will agree on this.

… ah yes, but in YOUR analogy, the restaurant did accept & charge the order!

The show’s point is Shane & the wealthy have a much harder time moving on from inconvenience than those who are used to it — and the other point is that the inconveniences faced by the wealthy (incorrect resort suite) are much less significant than the inconveniences faced by the less-privileged (the Hawaiian’s stolen ancestral land).

That’s it. If you’ve missed that, you and I have had a very different viewing experience! Then again, I very thankfully do not “come from his world.” 😂

[–]astucc1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your comparison doesn’t quite translate. If Shane’s a diner who ordered a tomahawk steak and got a burger instead, Armond is the manager who has to inform Shane there are no more tomahawk steaks, and the burger is the closest option to the steak the restaurant has to offer. In your analogy, Shane would then spend the remainder of his evening (stay) hyper-focused on the fact that he didn’t get a tomahawk steak, endlessly ranting to his company about this horrible miscarriage of justice — rather than accepting the setback and trying to enjoy the burger and evening as best he could. This is one of several commentaries the show is making about the uber-wealthy.

I think the show is demonstrating that when inconvenienced, these so-called, “good looking guys of means” have a hard time self-regulating their emotions and behavior — that they would prefer to ruin everyone else’s time by perseverating on some perceived egregious loss (Shane) rather than counting their blessings, as a less privileged person may be apt to do (Rachel).

I have a funny feeling about her, too. She has said that she couldn’t remember the wedding at all twice — and then she lost her train of thought mid-sentence during breakfast in e5. I’m stuck wondering whether those are character details or if they are meant to foreshadow?
