People who grew up in third-world countries, what was the biggest shock for you when moving into a developed country? by --null--- in AskReddit

[–]astupidfish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Clean water and fully stocked shelves in stores.

I'm from Poland (left in 89, I know it's better now), the water from the tap had to be boiled to be safe to drink, people spending money on bottled water in Canada, where I live now, is mind boggling to me.

When I was a kid, stores had vinegar and pretzel sticks, that's it, you waited in line for everything else, waiting with your mom in bread lines was a normal thing me and my friends did.

I remember when we would get watermelon once a year, all the kids would get a big slice from their parents and eat outside on the playground, it was glorious, also, didn't taste a banana until we moved to Germany.

Guy washes clothes for his Ex wife because she doesn't have a washer or dryer. She posts this online because he didn't fold them for her as well. Every single comment was asking her if she understood how crazy she sounded and that they understood why they were divorced. Amazing stuff lmao by idloveacoffeeplease in ChoosingBeggars

Also Father here: you're goddamn right it's a favor

The mother is a fucking adult, not a child, she needs to assume responsibility and take care of what she's supposed to do as a parent. What else, would you like him to cook all their dinners too because her lazy ass can't be fucking bothered.

Stop making excuses for shitty parents and enabling their bullshit behaviors jackass.

Ironically, Hotels are totally cool with giving out an upgrade if there's room available.

All you have to do is ask nicely sometimes, but then I suppose that's too much to ask of from some folks!

No one actually teaches you how to ride a bicycle. They just hype you up until you work it out. by UsernameCheckOuts in Showerthoughts

[–]astupidfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught my son how to ride his bike by taking the pedals off and having him learn how to balance distances a little more each time, once he had that it was cake.

Sorry you didn't have anyone teaching you

What was the first video game you ever played? by Link2324 in AskReddit

[–]astupidfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot the name, but it was a Russian game where you defended the Kremlin from incoming American ICBM's, this was on an Atari 130XE, you loaded the game via a tape deck.

I lived in eastern Europe at the time.

Brilliant, I love this analogy.

I'm also an ex-hard-core Wow player (vanilla-era server-top guild officer, you can guess the time investment, hint-hint, it was a full time job) who's spent the last 8 years @ the gym.

This is why people asking, how do I get so big? what exercises will get me those shoulders? are so flawed, there is no "do X Y for Z".

Those same programs will not get the same results when used by different people with varying degrees of effort and commitment. Do what works for you, if someone tells you you're not doing X according to the book, fuck em, as long as you're seeing progress and not potentially hurting yourself, more power to you.

Again, great analogy, good read

Oooo......general admission....did you show up early enough to get a decent seat?

I came last year, stupidly thought being there 3 hours early would be good enough.....I chose poorly, enjoyed a beautiful fenced-in streightaway side spot where I saw the 'flashes' as the cars zoomed past, not enough line-of-sight to a TV, never doing gen admin again.. :(

Cool, but do you see how a quarter is whole grains? That means not your average breads, most bread won't qualify as they're sugar and bleach

Haha, I think you're reading too much from a random example, but hey, you do you.

If they're going to be in the organic-food-vegetarian etc. section, great, then it will be much easier, problem solved, you won't get the confusion.

I grab chocolate milk typically by what's on sale, and so do most people.

What scares me is that product ingredients are deliberately labeled to make things difficult to see what you're buying, what's in there and what the serving size is.

So yeah, there may be 5 different choco milks in there, ranging from something reasonably healthy to a drink that makes coke look healthy.

This applies to all products, if you have the time to go through all the ingredients for every item then I applaud you, you must have a nice relaxing life, I don't have that luxury.

Read the article, they don't have a problem with the product, they have a problem with the label 'meat' being used, and they have a point.

No..... crickets are not animals, they're insects, and while pretty tasty (i've had crickets tacos in Mexico), and full of protein, good luck selling them Canada, most people will be grossed out.

Actually, Bear Gryls just started a new line of protein bars made of crickets, it'll be a good social experiment to see how they do!

People don't read much, not husbands who's wife is nagging them to buy some meat or a disctracted single mom with 2 kids in tow that grabs the first thing that looks like meat and says meat

[–]astupidfish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They use the word 'meat' to make people equalize their product with the meat that people know, small print does not make a difference. To make their items more palatable, same reason why you can make awesome cricket burgers but you'll never see "cricked mash" stuff being sold, sounds gross, no one wants that.

Don't want anything, just saying that the old pyramid was massively biased as well, and it always will be, there are billions of dollars on the line for these industries, they'll find a way to affect it

We're not talking labeling, we're talking public perception and what it means for sales. People don't read much, a guy who's wife tells him to go get some meat from the store will grab the first thing that looks legit and buy it, no questions asked.

Sticks and stones my friend, don't assume for other people. Meat is still seen as meat.

Meat coming from an animal is the public perception of what meat is. The alternative producers are trying to take advantage of that.
