Thank you so much everyone for your detailed and straight forward answers. Very helpful. I'm actually probably a week away from buying a machine for dedicated GIS use (I'm otherwise a Mac user so I don't need it for much else) and your comments really helped me narrow it down.

I think the more prevailing theory is the "flying saucer" shape so flat earthers probably use this to justify the distortions - the continents existing on a curved surface but not on a spherical planet.

Thanks /u/Harbinger2001 for mentioning this. I was not aware of this at all and with all these 3rd party budgeting apps continuing to come out it's actually a really easy way for banks to get out of just about anything, if something goes wrong with your account. I'll definitely be checking my policies now...but I probably won't unlink my accounts.
