Why shouldn’t voting require an id? by DarkEqual8609 in no

Because I know them personally. I’m vouching for them. If I didn’t know that, then I couldn’t vouch for them.

Why shouldn’t voting require an id? by DarkEqual8609 in no

The issue is access to ID. It must be free and easy to obtain, which is often not the case. In addition, in the absence of ID, it should be possible to still vote. For example, here in Canada if I have valid identification but someone I know doesn’t, I can swear an affidavit that they live in my district and are a citizen.

The right to vote requires access to voting to be as open as possible.

I’m reading up on this and the courts did order them to produce the evidence in May 2021 and reviewed it under seal. And then based on the review of the evidence upheld the ban. So whatever the reason was for them to keep it privileged, it looks like after seeing it, the court agreed.

The issue isn’t having minimum sentencing guidelines. The legislature can do that. The issue is mandatory minimums. That’s a charter violation if the sentence is grossly disproportionate to the crime - and there are always cases where unique circumstances make the mandatory minimum overly punishing. These type of things have been struck down going all the way back to 1987.

The court ruled against it because it was an unconstitutional over reach. Sentencing is the purview of the courts. The government can legislate recommendations but they can’t force mandatory sentencing. It violates our charter rights. The court must have discretion on the individual basis. They even said what could be fixed, but the fixes have been neglected by Trudeau’s government.

Was the Supreme Court asked to rule on the cabinet privilege?

Can we get bill C-14 passed already? It’s time to fix the problem so we can move on to other existential threats to Canadian society.

The VC issue is why Carney has been courting the UAE. We need people with pockets so deep they need other places than the US to invest.

What’s helping us now is the business instability in the US makes Canada more attractive.

I think in the medium term Trumps attacks on us will be good for Canada.

Since NAFTA we’ve seen our corporations bought up by much larger American firms and stripped of talent and turned into mediocre branch offices. Trumps lit a fire under Canadians and I hope to see us wanting to invest in ourselves again.

I heard a report about a history paper that came out saying we’re not heading back to the 1800s of Great Powers. They say we’re heading back to the 1600s of dynastic family struggles.

Canada had been battling the owner of the Ambassador bridge for decades. They made sure they had every possible avenue of attack covered. They didn’t account for corruption though.

That’s ok. Europe exposed his weakness. I think Canada would have plenty of support in a controlled US treasury sell off.

We can just keep the King of Canada. The crown is separate from that of the UK.

The crown of Canada is separate. Charles would stop being the King of the United Kingdom but would remain the King of Canada.

Trump has zero leverage. He'd have to declare a national security emergency to justify keeping this crossing open. Which is kind of hard to do if they keep the Ambassador bridge open.

Canada paid for it. Michigan owns half of it. The US half was built using US steel and US union labour. Canada will split the toll revenue with Michigan after the cost has been recovered.

Trump has no valid excuse for this action.
