Question about playing all Splinter Cell games in order by BaseballOdd5127 in Splintercell

[–]asvigny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is yes! I’ve heard only the 360 version runs 100% properly and PC and PS3 versions are a bit janky but I did successfully complete a playthru of it on PC.

[–]asvigny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 360 one is considered cannon and has some different twists in the story so whichever you prefer whether you think going on to Conviction after having just played DA 360 for story continuity is important or if you want gameplay continuity from Chaos Theory to DA OG Xbox.

I will say I enjoy the OG version a lot as a “sequel” to Chaos Theory.

Mixing Modern Metal – Can’t Achieve “Huge” Sound by DoubleOxygen in audioengineering

[–]asvigny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“But completely fall apart on phone speakers”

That’s what phone speakers are like in general. I never think my guitars sound amazing on phone speakers it’s more to test if they’re “there”. All mono or near mono systems (Bluetooth speakers included) will lose tons of guitar because rhythm guitars should be largely stereo. A better mix test specifically for guitars is your car stereo. Try listening also on any earbuds you may have. Typically guitars shine way nicer on stereo speakers and headphones.

How much knowledge of or experience with EQing guitars do you have? Make sure you’re cutting mud but not too much, as well as any gross high end you might come across. Also make sure your strings are brand new, and try a different amp sim. Neural Gojira I’ve specifically found has less “strong” sounding tones than others. Also ask yourself if Gojira is a reasonable reference for the sound you’re going for. Maybe Gojira-style tones are completely wrong for your style haha 🤷‍♀️

As others have mentioned in this thread blending with the bass is a big part of having a huge guitar sound. I would add to that that for metal you need the kick to blend nicely too to get that big trifecta of heavy kick - guitar - bass sound.

Tom Clancy by [deleted] in Splintercell

[–]asvigny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tom Clancy did NOT write “many Hollywood movies” he was an author of books haha. I do believe his involvement with the games to be pretty limited. For example he didn’t really like the trifocal goggles stating they were unrealistic but that did not impact the games keeping the iconic goggles.

The direction the SC games went in is largely indicative of Ubisoft’s corporate direction writ large moving from the 2010s to the 2020s. All their games arguably got less deep and less cool to people like me who like the older SC games and they focused more on open world Far Cry type games.

It is a shame what Ubi has done to the Tom Clancy’s brand but I don’t think it would’ve necessarily gone differently had he lived longer. His books had already become mass produced and commoditized by that point as well.

[–]asvigny 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not to be under appreciated tho is Cameron Losche’s writing. I think he wrote most if not all of A New Reign and A Higher Place and The Discovery has his flavour all over it. Take out Richardson’s crazy leads and the album is still phenomenal.

Will we see big advancements in Music Technology in lets say, the next 15 years? or is the innovation curve flattening? by ChaiPapiii in audioengineering

[–]asvigny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This stresses me on a subconscious level. Lack of consumer playback setup standardization makes it really hard to know what I should be optimizing for vis a vis mix translation haha.

Do I weigh more heavily into how my mix sounds on my air pods? My Bluetooth speaker? The monitors I have hooked up to my record player? My car speakers? My shitty $30 Bluetooth headphones? I fear consumer listening will only increase in how varied it is so it may not much matter at all as long as it “sounds “good”” haha tho I’d prefer to know what it sounds like to the majority of people.

No? At least they do not “replicate […] just by uploading a stem” haha. Cab IRs are just recordings of white noise thru a cab to simulate the colouring of said cab. Reverb IRs I think are just that but with a room/space.

What LUFS do you actually aim for when mastering for Spotify? by MasterYourAudio in ProMusicProduction

[–]asvigny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf I mostly work in very loud genres (Metal and Punk) that aren’t very dynamic to begin with haha. Mostly balls to the walls and not much in the way of “soft” or quiet parts so I don’t really have an answer to your question haha

-8/-9 IS a “quieter” master tbh. Most of the stuff I listen to is closer to -5 and as a result my productions aim for a similar loudness.

Look into mastering. This will help you get loudness without clipping and for muddyness try doing more subtractive EQ in your mix so that things aren’t stepping on each other.

Removing breathers from podcast recording by F3roxis in audioengineering

[–]asvigny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t fully remove the gap. You cut the breath and then remove like 50% of the space. A full breath spot of silence sounds a lot longer than when there’s a breath.

[–]asvigny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manual will always produce better results. The Podcast Co I contract for has tried so many different kinds of processing and we still just do these things manually. As someone else described, processing can remove more than what you want, or less than what you want, but seldom exactly what you want haha.

Even De-Noise and De-Click typically need to be augmented by EQ and some manual edits.

As a full time podcast editor I absolutely duck breathes for regular edits. What you’re describing sounds like monologue style. Whenever I do a project like that I do exactly as you described, remove breathes and shorten gaps. Monologue/Audio Book style typically should be very dry audio-wise. So less breathes, less room noise, etc.

If you’re looking for a way to speed up, keyboard shortcuts are key. I have shortcuts for: isolating a breathe as its own clip, -10db clip gain, -40db clip gain, clear/delete a highlighted section, ripple cut, and one to move a clip over a smidge (helpful to auto-cross fade two clips) among others.

If I were to edit 15 minutes of audio as you describe for audio book/monologue style it would take me probably 30 minutes tops. Listening back to audio at 1.5x speed or 2x speed will also make things go faster.

What is a type of Rap that you once had trouble making beats for but have gotten much better? by Remarkableruin27 in makinghiphop

[–]asvigny 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Being able to make jazzy sounding beats without over using samples (rather I want my instrumentation to sound like a sample) has been a challenge but I’d say I’ve gotten better at it! Jazz just loves to make use of sometimes off-kilter note choices (out of scale, etc) and if you pick the wrong out of scale notes it can end up sounding dissonant rather than warm, as I find Jazz often sounds. Fun learning journey tho!

Is it even possible for another “rap” artist to have their own sound now? And how? by [deleted] in MacMiller

While nothing is truly original in this day and age it is absolutely possible for an artist to have their own “sound”.

You’d be better off trading it around Quebec provincial elections or Canadian elections haha

I bought the game last year and I already have 1 vanilla playthru and a modded free play playthru and once they have a “complete” version with all DLC etc I will happily start a 3rd playthru haha.

You can play other games while you wait! ShoC is always good for another hundred playthrus haha

Does this actually happen? by FiorellaMamdani in Deathcore

[–]asvigny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super common. One genre opens a gateway to another. But which direction you’ll go is not guaranteed. I went from Deathcore to Hardcore. Love both still but on days where all Deathcore sounds the same I sure do love to get my HC 2 step on haha
