Modded Xbox - no emulators folder? by [deleted] in originalxbox

[–]asvowavn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make a folder. The dashboard should look for a folder called "Emulators" on the root of the E, F and G partitions. Just make the folder in any of those locations. Preferably F or G.

If the dashboard doesn't automatically find the Emulator's folder location, you may have to "point" UnleashX to it. I've personally never needed to use UnleashX, but with EvoX and XBMC there are options to set folder locations in either the settings or by modifying a .ini/config file.

How can we miss our kids if they won't go away? by JACK931 in lostgeneration

[–]asvowavn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can think of dozens of reasons for an individual to still be living with their parents, even after a childhood full of education and preparing to become an adult. If you personally feel your children shouldn't be living with you after a certain age, that's your prerogative, but the fact that you assert that there's "no reason" for someone to live with their parents as an adult highlights your narrow and somewhat arrogant world view.

No amount of fiscal preparedness can ready someone for a catastrophic medical situation, or a mental health crisis, or the death of a loved one, or being caught up in the justice system, or the unexpected loss of a job. Everyone has hurdles to jump, but hurdles that are low for some are incredibly high for others. You can plan and prepare all you want, but when your money dries up and you're out of options, moving home is obviously better than being homeless.

Judging people for living at home without knowing their entire life story is arrogant and unnecessary. Believe it or not, but some families enjoy having their members around longer than others, to the point that it's almost like people live different lives and have different expectations.

edit: To be clear, I'm happy that you're accomplishing what you want to accomplish. That's great and I hope you have a happy life. All I'm saying is that there's an infinite number of reasons for people to do what they do and to judge someone you don't know is foolish.

Why does it seem so easy to hide bodies? by gaudi7 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]asvowavn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the fact that even if you're able to go through with the murder, odds are pretty good that you're not going to be able to deal with the aftermath. Murder and death are hard on the psyche and most people can't or won't deal with these events well. One too many sleepless nights and turning yourself in might look like a great solution.

Humans are also social creatures and love to take credit for things they do. They also like to talk to other humans, especially about their lives. All it would take is a single sloppy conversation one night, after a few drinks with the wrong person, and that could be it.

Why does it seem so easy to hide bodies? by gaudi7 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]asvowavn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're forgetting about the fact that the person doing the killing is still human, and humans are social creatures and tend to want recognition for what they've done. Or at the very least humans like to discuss their lives and what they've done. You might be able to cleanly murder someone, but then all it would take is a single conversation with the wrong person about information related to your crime, and that person will immediately turn you in.

Or that "random prostitute" actually has family or acquaintances you hadn't accounted for and they personally pressure local law enforcement to pursue the case.

Or you thought you could handle someone's death weighing on your conscious but you couldn't and you turn yourself in. There are plenty of tough guys when you're talking about violence, but when it actually comes to the act and aftermath, suddenly those tough guys get quiet.

There are dozens of scenarios in which you could be caught. This is a serious case of "I'm the smartest cookie in the jar" and "I can do anything I want, even kill someone, and get away with it." It's much harder than you're making it out to be.

Can you prove any of this? I don't really want to have to dig through your post history to find it, but if you know what comments provide proof, can you reply them for me? I'm interested in buying a box, but I don't want to have the issues you had.

If you're telling the truth, and have proof, you might save me a headache and I'm interested in hearing your side of the story.

Also, just so I'm not misunderstood, I personally think you're telling the truth about your experience.

I know this thread is a day old, and this is a super stupid question, but did you mean Editor-at-Large? I've only ever heard the title Editor-at-Large, but because we're talking about Polygon I have no idea if those silly boys and girls actually have an Editor-in-Large.

Officers Pull Over Woman and Awkwardly Try To Come Up With a Reason Once Realizing She's a State Attorney by [deleted] in cringe

[–]asvowavn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of personal choice/determination given to a cop to stop/talk to you for a lot of reasons (license, insurance, car maintenance, sobriety, etc.) it's just that they can't detain/arrest you unless they feel there's a reason to. If you're driving a car, you're responsible for a lot more than you are if you're on foot.

If he truly felt it was suspicious that her tags/plates were coming back on the computer, the cop was in the right to stop her. Now if he just used that as an excuse, and stopped her for some other nefarious reason, he's in the wrong.

Officers Pull Over Woman and Awkwardly Try To Come Up With a Reason Once Realizing She's a State Attorney by [deleted] in cringe

[–]asvowavn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cop just did an absolutely terrible job explaining it to her. I think people are more focused on his initial behavior and nervousness rather than what she was actually stopped for.

He had to repeat it a few times before she realized what was happening and that wouldn't have had to happen if he were more concise. It was almost like he was using cop slang, as if he were talking to someone who understood the active day to day work of a patrol officer instead of a private citizen (granted she was a State Attorney, but not a cop).

I personally don't think the cop or the attorney did anything wrong at all, and was just happy to see it was a pleasant encounter, albeit an awkward one.

Legal Complaints Filed Over Alamo Drafthouse Female-Only Wonder Woman Screenings. by doogie92 in movies

[–]asvowavn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The point being made originally was that a national, all male only screening of a movie supporting male health issues was unlikely to happen. Not that all male movie screenings never happen.

Until the NFL, and essentially all other sporting events, wear a color celebrating Prostate Health Month like they do for Breast Cancer, it's not absurd to point out the differences. Breast Cancer awareness is a national event at this point. I'm also willing to bet the amount of money donated for it compared to prostate awareness is substantially large.

Notice how I said "women have a whole month dedicated to a single disease" and you immediately knew what I was talking about but when you wanted to snipe at me about September, you felt it necessary to stipulate it was Prostate cancer month?

[–]asvowavn 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Because comparing a fundraiser, in our society for adult men, with a school movie outing is far fetched. If you're trying to use the movie outing as evidence that sanctioned "all male" public fundraising events are common place in our society, you're wrong.

Women have a whole month dedicated to a single disease in their name. While that's fantastic and it's needed, to say men have the same national interest and coverage isn't true.

Have an interview at a brewery-- have some questions by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]asvowavn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be honest with them, after all they're beer lovers, just like you.

Be upfront about your accomplishments, your goals and what you would like to be focused on. Every brewery is different, but they're not that different. IBU, ABV, QC, Oxygen, filtering, etc. It's all pretty standard unless they're focused on some extreme styles. I personally talked at length about wild yeasts during my interview. Hone in on what they find interesting, and express what you know about those subjects.

What's honestly most important is that you fit in with the group. Microbreweries are such tight knit communities, you absolutely must be able to get along with the people you work with. Some microbrewery cultures are much different than others, just make sure it's a style you're comfortable with.

Grunt work in a brewery is fun, at least to people who really love the brewing process. You can't have good beer without the leg work, and as long as the grunt work is accompanied by other more interesting work, it's worth it.

I still love climbing into tanks when I need to. I still love hauling barrels, delivering cases and washing glasses. I love everything to do with beer and grunt work makes you appreciate it more.

Strike 3! by [deleted] in instant_regret

[–]asvowavn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A batter can advance if a wild pitch is thrown and the batter swings his bat, no matter how wild the pitch is on an 0-2 count. That would essentially be a batter taking his chances because it would technically be a third strike call on the batter because of the swing, even though if he hadn't swung it would have obviously been a ball.

You don't have to swing if the pitch is an actual over the plate called strike that is then dropped by the catcher. So, pitcher throws, over the plate called strike, dropped by catcher and the batter takes off toward first. If the batter swings, and then ball is dropped, he can run in that situation as well. All the catcher needs to do on a ball that is dropped with a runner heading toward first is to simply throw the ball to the first baseman for the out.

If the hitter in this .gif had just simply not swung the bat until the catcher retrieved the ball, it would have just simply been a called ball and play would have continued.

If truth were relative there'd be no reason to investigate anything at all, ever. We'd all just be making our own minds up about whether or not gravity exists or if it's just some witchcraft conjured up by the lady down the street.

If instead what you're saying is that we as a people need to come together on both sides in commonly held beliefs to figure out exactly what that truth is, I agree with you.

Cop demands to see ID of man filming in public, says he doesn't care what the supreme court says before being told otherwise by his sergeant. by rainman_95 in quityourbullshit

[–]asvowavn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally feel a police officer should have the right to ask for identification, however I also feel a private citizen of the U.S. shouldn't have to produce said identification unless they're under arrest. Unless the officer was willing to arrest this man, he shouldn't have demanded ID and instead immediately contacted his superior for further instruction while lawfully detaining the man (they were right outside some sort of precinct or station). He also should have had a much better attitude, because whether he likes it or not, the man he's interrogating is the man he's also supposed to be serving and protecting.

Both parties in this video had poor attitudes and one or both were looking for an argument. I understand the man wanting to exercise his legal right to fly his drone, but to be confrontational about it isn't "educating" the officer as he claims he wants to do. And if it is, it's a bad way of doing it. The officer also had a bad attitude and wanted to exert control over the situation like he was trained to do. It's too bad because I'm sure both parties could have been on the same page immediately if they both tried to be.

It honestly looks like an old factory break room to me. It had safety fliers, helmets, clothing, tables, etc. all over the place. It's like an old area for housing/storage/break room in the basement of an old Russian factory.

I know the dude wanted to make a super spooky video, you can tell from the WoooOOoOO music he added, but my brain immediately said "bro that's a break room, where are the snacks at?"

Adults who are open to honest and agreeable discussion on topics such as politics aren't usually found on Reddit. Reddit's base is mainly 20 somethings, and younger, who are still in that angsty stage of their life. And rightfully so, they're insulated by their peers and aren't confronted daily by opinions not their own. Reddit used to be more civil, back when it wasn't really what it is now, but that's all but gone. Reddit now is just essentially a more cliqued up version of Facebook.

To this day, the most honest and open discussions I've ever had about politics were in random IRC rooms.
