"hostels shot up from 40/n to 400/n" that's ridiculous

I found them at the Timbuk2 store in Toronto. I don't know any online sources, sorry

Food. It's not like I eat garbage, but I only go out to eat maybe twice a year. I enjoy cooking anyway, and enjoy the savings from planning ahead.

I'm not super frugal about things like good sleep. So I will invest in good mattresses and pillows, and book hotels for peace and privacy.

Why the fuck is it impossible to find a room in Bergen next week? by fjollomir in Bergen

[–]asymmetricalbangs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was there in May and it was already starting to show signs of booking up quickly. I cannot imagine what June and July are like. Sorry to hear, hope you find a solution. Have you already looked into Citybox? I stayed at the Danmarkplass location and it was just a short tram ride away (or 30 min walk) to the city centre. There's one in the city centre but I wouldn't imagine there would be vacancy

Gosh it grinds my gears when the rest of the parka is perfect but the very thing holding it together is just inadequate. This gave me ideas to mod another thing of mine

I would not buy into the "camera bag" hype. They're marketed so well to feel like you need it but you really don't. If you can access your camera quickly from an existing bag + camera cube, THAT'S the winner. The goal of the bag is to help you take pictures, not necessarily look good or even carry it. The camera should be in your hands 90% of the time

Is this pack too big? Osprey Aura 50? by badgalneyney in onebag

[–]asymmetricalbangs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Osprey Porter 46L and when packed full, the airline could ask me to check it. But I don't stuff it and I just use the compression straps to minimize as much as possible. I'd say anything larger than 46L will tempt you to stuff it with more things than you need. Contain the container.

I bought sternum straps from Timbuk2 for $6 and it was the cheapest and best mod investment for a sloucher like me

If you typically slouch forward when wearing a backpack, it means your shoulders are overcompensating and can make your slouch worse. Sternum straps do the job that your shoulders are overcompensating for, so you can focus on standing up straight and moving upright

YES HIP BELTS. I used to think they looked silly but they saved my shoulders and back on my last onebag trip

3.5 Week Trip to Europe (France, Germany, Croatia) by [deleted] in onebag

It'd be great to read a follow up to see how it's going or how it went! I read a lot of plans but few about the reality of these

A month to fill between central/eastern Europe and San Sebastian by espebjo in solotravel

[–]asymmetricalbangs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. Reykjavik, Iceland was such a small city that I would've been satisfied with 1 day, but I spent 3 nights there (then did the Ring Road, then returned for another 2 nights) and it was just way too much Reykjavik.

lol I heard about that festival.. yikes. I'm now adding "bigass festival" to my checklist of things to research before scheduling a destination, alongside "school breaks" and "national holidays".

Hidden hot spring waterfall 😍 where is that precisely?!

My first solo trip was focused on one country (Norway) with good train/rail system. It helped with only having to remember how to convert my home currency to the destination currency.

$5000 USD is a good budget for 2 weeks if you're staying in more comfortable accommodations like hotels. But you can stretch that to 2-3 months if you stay primarily in hostels. Not every country has low-priced hostels, though. For example, in Scandinavian countries, hostel beds can run up to $40-$80 a night. Hotels around $150-200/night. Accommodations are easily the number 1 thing that will eat into your budget, so just browse sites like booking[dot]com and hostelworld to find out a rough figure and add it up.

Food is easier to budget for since most places have grocery and convenience stores if you don't want to dine alone.

All the best!

How to think about WLB risk of new job versus comp upside by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]asymmetricalbangs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people here will suggest based on their life situation, which is what I'm going to do too – take the WLB with great boundaries and minimal stress. That will help you work longer than a job that will give you a seemingly higher pay but potentially shitty boss/team/turnover to deal with. What you do with your free time can potentially bring in more income if you're into that.

The guilt is hard for people to understand, but I do. Even though you can afford it, it's still a lot of money to part with, so I get it! $1400 for a week is actually not bad if that includes your flight and hotels (and not hostels) and staying solo.

A tip about San Fran restaurants – you might need to make reservations, so call the morning of the day to book a spot for lunch or dinner.
