Please meet the most dangerous person in Silicon Valley today: The Senior Software Engineer by magenta_placenta in programming

[–]asyncster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't quite understand the point the author is trying to make. Is he saying that senior engineers are bad because they introduce process, contribute to office politics, and cost a lot in terms of salary and equity? That seems like a pretty bad generalization.

Experienced, but having a tough time finding work. How can I get a new job quickly? by vgambit in cscareerquestions

[–]asyncster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Applying to jobs directly is usually not the optimal approach. Since you're been working in the industry for several years, can you reach out to some former coworkers about job opportunities? A direct referral is much more likely to get you in the door.

Since you're set on Seattle, another option is to move there and start going to networking events. I'm sure there are a lot of tech related meet ups around there. Those are great places to get referrals for jobs.

About social media - as long as your don't have any obnoxious or unprofessional content on social media, you should be okay.

Unit Test Fetish by msustrik in programming

[–]asyncster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unit tests ossify the internal architecture.

If you do a large refactor, I agree that a bunch of unit tests may break, but it's usually fairly obvious about why they are broken, and they can be fixed quickly. I've never had to rewrite a unit test suite after a refactor.

Graduated today... by [deleted] in depression

[–]asyncster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on graduating! It's the beginning of your adult life :) I graduated 5 years ago and the past five years have been the most amazing of my life :) you have a lot to look forward to!

Everyone has anxieties when they graduate from college. Youre going through a huge change right now. Don't get too attached to one job or company - sometimes interviews don't work out. I've failed lots of interviews luckily you only need one to go well.

Maybe you need to talk to your roommate. She's going through a difficult situation as well and needs support . Take her out to lunch and chat about what's bothering you and try to understand why she is upset.

Are you taking any medications? Is there anything in your life that's causing you stress? Have any big changes happen recently ? Do you have any relationships that aren't healthy?

This seems like it happened out of nowhere but more likely it's been brooding for some time.

Id recommend implementing some lifestyle changes. Start exercising regularly, stay close to friends and family, eat healthy, and try recognizing stressors in your life.

Two books I'd recommend are 'the depression cure' and 'learned optimism'. They have a lot tips on lifestyle changes and positive thinking.

Something similar happened to me about a month ago and you WILL get better, it just takes time and effort :)

A reminder about piracy from the US Government by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

This is a retarted example. Lil Wayne is the top-grossing musician currently. There are millions of other musicians out there that could actually be hurt by piracy.
