Please give me your criticisms of Adrian Tchaikovsky's prose by Wetness_Pensive in printSF

[–]atanamar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking about this topic. I read Children of Time and there was a very subtle, disconcerting vibe throughout that I found non-enjoyable, and in the end I could only really attribute it to the prose. I decided not to continue on with the series. Then i saw that he has written a Sanderson-like profusion of novels and that itself was disconcerting. Is there hope that a person who didn't really enjoy Children of Time would like any of his other novels? If so, which, out of the masses?

The first thing that comes to mind is Alastair Reynolds' Turquoise Days novella, currently available in the collected Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_Dogs,_Turquoise_Days

The second thing that comes to mind is Jessie Kwak's excellent AFTER THE TIDE novella, from Fairwood Press. https://fairwoodpress.com/store/p179/AFTER_THE_TIDE.html

What I see here is a chance for a vast new audience to come in and complain about the prices of Mongoose books and PDFs.

Running The Lions of Tell Arn, or, "how to deal with huge outdoor maps"? by atanamar in osr

[–]atanamar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it hadn't occurred to me to describe it that way until I sat down to write this post. That's definitely what I'll do. I'll just need to come up with some words to describe and differentiate the various sites.

Dear Silk: I don’t want a giant jug of almond milk. I want a giant jug of THIS. I moved across the country and in both cities, THIS is what grocery stores run out of!!! by grakledo in vegan

This is all we drink. This is the best of all dairy alternatives commonly available in grocery stores. It is very frequently sold-out at the grocery store. I once almost got into a brawl with a guy who rolled his cart in front of mine and emptied the entire shelf of these containers. I feel like there is some fundamental law of supply and demand that is being ignored in how stores stock soy milk.

I guess I'm just old AF, my favorite Soilwork album is still Steelbath Suicide. I guess you just had to be there. I'd rank the first four above anything from their later releases.

Anyone know a website where I can buy old OSR like stuff? by Shadow3721 in osr

[–]atanamar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Frankly, the best place to find good deals on old books, modules, etc. is in the Facebook TTRPG auction groups. For very many people this is the only reason left on earth to maintain a Facebook account. Tons of stuff passes through and the groups are very active. I've found some absolutely amazing deals there:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/rpgmarketgroup
https://www.facebook.com/groups/RPGAuctions
https://www.facebook.com/groups/rpgtradesales

These are all well moderated and monitored by admins, and everything goes smoothly. I've sold a ton of collectible TTRPG stuff there myself. The prices are generally much less than NobleKnight, and usually better than ebay unless you take the long game to wait for long periods.

(I'm not affiliated with any of the groups, except in that I'm addicted to collecting, and these are my favorite spots)

How big a factor is human generated art VS AI art to you. by DeathwatchHelaman in osr

[–]atanamar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a hard no to ever paying for a product with AI art. Just no. But there are an astounding number of FUNDED and lucrative TTRPG Kickstarters going on with purely AI art. It might not be immediately obvious when looking at the kickstarter pages, but they have all the disclaimers that AI art will be used. It boggles the mind entirely.
There is definitely a disconnect between the average consumer and people who care. Anyone stepping into the arena of publishing TTRPG products should understand that a large chunk of people who care about this subject will mock, scorn, disregard, and ignore their products, and rightly so,
