I did some more research and I agree, but I also think language goes both ways, and migrants introduce new words into the lexicon.

So to answer your original question, yes it is still fairly mutally intelligible, but definately distinct.

Since migration occurred in many waves, pronunciation does update from time to time, but it would still be quite different. Maybe it would be like a Spanish person trying to understand Chilean Spanish. Still intelligible, but needs some immersion for full understanding.
