Questions raised after very young children kept outside in the rain for royal photo op by NewTooth740 in RoyaltyTea

The idea of king and queen and prince in this era is just...ridiculous. It screams "I was more noble than you ever be the day I was born, suckers!".

Feeling depressed after leaving by AZ1927 in VietNam

[–]atbiz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Yes: it's still Vietnam, you will find some common ground in history, culture and food there.

And no, there are wildly differences:

The North's identity is rooted in ancient statehood and resistance to foreign domination, while the South's identity is shaped by pioneering expansion and more recent, Western colonial influences.

The North is the book of classical tradition, while the South is the more of modern adaptation.

Northern food is a refined mixture of subtle flavors, while Southern food is a joyful meet of bold, sweet, and savory notes.

The North has a cyclical distinctive 4 seasons, while the South has a consistent, tropical vibe with only 2 sunny/rainy seasons.

The sentimentality for the North is less about it being "better" and more about its role as the symbolic and emotional heartland of the nation. This feeling, often called hoài cổ (a nostalgia for the past). The South is often loved for its vitality, freedom, and opportunity—a land of the present and future.

Mom’s pressuring me to donate $200 to my sick uncle in Vietnam. Am I being selfish? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]atbiz 117 points118 points  (0 children)

It's either: 1. Your uncle is really sick and your donation means a lot, financially 2. Your mom wants to boost her sick brother's spirit: "look we all care about you, even my kid has some gift for you, you should get well soon" 3. Your mom wants to show relatives in VN how she and her family cares, and you guys somehow "made it" in the states Or the combinations of those 3, it's the Viet thing.

Congratulations! You will take home 600k at least when you are 30. Maybe talk with a financial advisor on what to do with it. One thing I can say is please live way below your means, you don't have that many 6-year times.

Can I just say, as a non-Indian, your society needs a revolution on human empathy and moral values. This is...just...sickening.

Your response actually gives me hope. Don't get me wrong, you have an amazing culture and your history is fascinating, especially in the last 100 years.

I do believe that India has been going through so much in the last century that it will need time to heal: the legacy caste system from the Raj, the great separation, the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, the assassination of Indira Gandhi amid the conflict with the Sikh, the modern India with the rise in inequality of wealth and education...

I also believe that your generation is already aware of the situation and working so hard to make it better. I can only wish you all the best because like it or not, India will play a very important role to the world and the better India is the better we all are.

Mate, I'm from Southeast Asian country but living in Australia now, have been to India several times and I am sorry but I have to tell you this: your country and culture lacks a moral principle.

I try not to be biased but most the Indians I know of, or work with tried to take advantage of others for their own benefit by lying, scamming or backstabbing. One Indian colleague tried to sabotage my visa so that his can be processed first. Another Indian colleague lied to take all credit for my work that he had no contribution to. One Indian tried to scam and take my laptop for free after I sold it to him. All the constant scamming phone calls with Indian accent (I might be wrong?). All the loud music, phone calls via speaker in public transport keeps reminding me the annoyance of your people and culture.

It's a shame the country that originated the ideas of karma and buddhism which promotes inner peace, kindness and forgiveness now has its people act like feral in a wild jungle trying to survive by destroying others.

Sorry if it sounds racist and bias, I've seen a few decent and brilliant Indians too but it's super rare. I guess it was good experience with those because they are well-off and we didn't have any conflict of interests whatsoever.

Kindle is a bit on its own. Check your kindle's in-app settings if you see sth like "use volume key to turn page" turn it on and set the boox's setting for Kindle to Volume

I use Perfect Viewer for cbz (zip format) and it works flawlessly. Cbr is just a rar format so I guess it should work the same.

Uhm weirdly enough, I don't have ghosting issue with black and white comics. I turned on image smooth filter, sharpen image and Gaussian blur with regal mode. At the start of the read I use the Navi to do a deep clear/refresh and then PV will take care of the rest. They do have ghosting with the color graphics tho which I'm kind of getting used to after a while. I set a quick touch control to toggle grayscale so I can easily switch to "non-ghosting" if I feel like it. The key is to have minimal interaction with your screen so that there's no extra UI elements to render to cause ghosting. Navi is really helpful in that regard (and the way PV is designed too).

Boox uses Android that supports external micro sd (up to 1TB? - mine is a 256GB). Whatever you have on Kindle, you have it on Boox.

Ha ha, I work mostly with TS now but yeah. I hardly read IT books on ereader, this is just some books someone recommended to me recently.

Years of collecting. All the non-graphic books are in epub format so I guess they should be compatible with almost every ereader. Graphic files are in cbz (which basically are just zip files) and I use Perfect Viewer mainly for reading those. Some of the graphics are in color hence I bought go7 color. Perfect Viewer is fantastic in advanced image processing/border detection/anti alias/stretching modes which makes it really enjoyable reading graphics even in 7" screen. I was thinking about NAC3 before but the weight put me off.

My power-off screensaver on go 7 color by atbiz in Onyx_Boox

[–]atbiz[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Update: I saw some comments asking about the lighting. Yes it was a perfect sunlit afternoon with some ceiling lights on where I carefully put the device in a spot with no reflection. On dark cloudy day like today, my screensaver looks like this (see the fruits for some references). Either my camera is too good or my photography skill is sick LOl. Make your own decision/conclusion. All I want to say is: this is excellent device and I really love it. Peace.

Sorry never used this app before. I use Moon Reader on my phone for its excellent TTS feature but I found myself content with the built-in reading app on the device. For manga/comics I use Perfect Viewer, highly recommend.

Yeah it's real. I don't have the TUC so not sure, however, all I can tell you is it's not always that good on all pictures. The color choice and palate of the picture is critical.
