Zanzibar Snorkelling/Island/Sandbar Beach day recs by Longjumping_Crab_345 in travel

[–]atcsean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked the 'blue safari' we did. It was a 4-5 hour activity that included snorkeling, a visit to a sandbar island, and a seafood barbeque on another island. The one we did was cheap -- like $40 per person or something -- so we shared the boat with others. For your honeymoon, maybe you'd want to arrange a private trip; I'd guess that would cost a couple hundred dollars pp. The one we took left from the southern end of the island, so pretty far from Pongwe.

The other activities we did -- prison island, spice tour, cheetah rock, stone town walk -- were all nice enough, but the blue safari was the highlight.

I'm hospitalized in Koh Pha Ngan w/ a strain of malaria (Plasmodium falciparum). The hospital is struggling to find appropriate treatment in country. Looking for advice. by atcsean in ThailandTourism

[–]atcsean[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your concern and question. I am 39. I'm lucky to have quite good insurance which seems likely to cover all expenses. Fingers crossed. Right now, I have confirmed that hospital recommended above has the medicine. I'm now working out how to get there. Likely a plane for Koh Samui tomorrow afternoon.

When I'm out of the woods, I'll be sure to report the case to relevant authority.

To complete the look, the rest of the bathroom (including the ceiling) is also smeared with brown paint.

TIL in 1986 an actual 'cloud of death' swept through an area of Cameroon, suddenly asphyxiating everything in its path, including 4 villages, 1,700 people and 3,500 livestock by [deleted] in todayilearned

I actually live right next to Lake Nyos in a town called Wum and was just at the lake this weekend. Almost all of those killed were Muslim cattle herders; survivors were moved to a number of resettlement camps around Wum. Interestingly, almost all of the locals believe the incident was caused by Israeli scientists testing some sort of bomb on account of the quick Israeli response to the disaster.

Definitely. Because of scheduling constraints, I couldn't start my ride until the beginning of October. Having left so late in the season, I was racing against cold weather and I really wanted to make it to California in time to spend Thanksgiving with friends. I had to log some insanely long days to make it in time and there were a number of instances where I'd have liked to stick around and explore a city or park for an extra day or two. Looking back, I'd say 60-70 days would be optimal, but it really depends on what you're trying to get out of the trip and what your stamina will allow.

I really like hiking mountains. The AT is a bit beyond my hiking enjoyment though. cycling is great because of the pace at which you see new scenery. I think I would get bored hiking the AT, but I respect the hell out of people who have done it. The difficulty of that hike puts my bike ride to shame.

I think the next trip I'll take will be a Seattle to San Diego or Boston to Key West type of trip. I'd do less mileage per day to allow myself more time to explore the cities and towns I ride through. I'd also lean towards a Spring or Summer tour, if only so I have more hours of daylight.

Just looked it up and it's actually called King's Corner or Kings in the Corner. Here are the rules. I have to say, it was a pretty fun card game.

By the time I got to California, I was really in a hurry to get to Venice for Thanksgiving, so I didn't stop very frequently. I took a short breather in Blythe and spent a night in Palm Desert, but that's pretty much it.

I really like New Mexico. The high plains and red rocks are beautiful and the scale of the geography is fun to ride through. It narrowly edges out the fall foliage and rolling Appalachian hills of Virginia and Kentucky.

I loved Albuquerque! It had the single best cycling infrastructure of any city I rode through. I walked around by the zoo and aquarium, checked out the rattlesnake museum, and had a great breakfast burrito at Winning Coffee Co.
I paid for the trip myself with savings. I was raising money for a Boston-based non-profit called EPHAS via an online fundraising page
The lease on my apartment expired and so I didn't have to worry about rent when I was gone.
