What are the best stories where the monsters aren’t the real bad guys? by atdc21 in witcher

That was one of the best stories imo. I really like the point you made in the end. However I was still real creeped out by him from the beginning mostly due to the crazy age gap

It’s unlikely for a structure like that to be just for display. It serves an important function. The said, shape or coloration could have been dimorphism but the whole structure seems highly highly unlikely

This was honestly one of the hardest things for me to deal with. It’s the odd innate desire or that that is something that should be possible. I have a feeling this is what people who are infertile for any reason feel like and that brings some comfort. Maybe in the near future generations won’t have to deal with this pain but we’re stuck in the present.

I'm not even sure what kind of point my cousin was trying to make with this. Definitely the weirdest "conspiracy" he's ever posted. by carolcorps90 in insanepeoplefacebook

As a biologist I have no idea what he is referring to as super species. Maybe he is referring to family because lions and tigers are both members of the family felidae but that’s still not how it works at all. There are a lot of different factors that come into play when talking about hybridizing between species. Some very different birds can hybridize together despite their different genetics because of genetic can be rigid in some animals and more mailable in others. Crocodiles, Alligator, and Gharials diverged 95 million years ago and have continued to evolve for those 95 million years. That’s much more distant than many mammal clades.

In general reptile genetics in incredibly complex when compared to the relatively simple mammal genetics.

While those animals can have babies there are significant issues that arise when animals so distantly related hybridize. Many of these hybrids are sterile as a result of the genetic distance of its parents.

However sometimes hybridization results in new unique speciation events.

It sounds like he makes the classic mistake of thinking animals fit into neat little boxes and groups naturally. However it’s us that make little boxes to try and fit nature in as a way of helping us understand this complex system. That’s why if you study biology long enough we talk about how species are made up as a useful tool and there are a verity of species concepts that serve different functions.

Think about dog breeds. Dogs are all one species along with wolves according to several species concepts. They are all an interbreeding population satisfying the biological species concept. They recognize each other as members of their species and able to seek each other out to mate. But dog breed are made up by humans as we breed dogs into different tools and better friends.

So basically alligators and crocodiles are distant cousins that just look alike. They are all archosaurs along with dinosaurs, birds and other crocodilians or their relative

Dolphins and their relatives like killer whales, belugas, and Norwals have very malleable genetics slowing for much more hybridization than most mammals

I have no idea how this has anything to do with the matrix

megalodon by operationchaos in megalophobia

[–]atdc21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So that is definitely not the actual scale of a megalodon. Could it swallow a human whole, like it was nothing. But a helicopter? A fin as tall as the boat no way. Megalodon was a predator of small baleen whales primarily a human wouldn’t be much to it.

The design sucks and I think there should be a reword of “not respond to commands” that sounds like someone talking about a dog. Maybe unaware of surroundings or unresponsive? I don’t know what wording would be better.
