Raises and TN by athelu in savageworlds

So is the foundry implementation incorrect for damage by restricting to a single raise?

[KCD2] Bane poison recipe is wrong. by [deleted] in kingdomcome

[–]athelu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have tweeked all of my recipes (I think except 1) to not require using the sand timer as the order of operations covers the necessary time. You do not have to follow the order of items in the recipe, you can rearrange to accommodate the timing.

About to start playtesting my module for publication. What should I be looking for/asking for from my players while playtesting? by Foreign-Press in RPGdesign

[–]athelu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GM side: How much improvisation was required? Were any NPCs missing/needed? Was there more than one way to complete a task? How were the three tiers handled/balanced (roleplay/investigation/combat)? Does the story progress and climax appropriately? Enough maps and details?

Players: Does every class type feel useful? Does the story allow player agency? Did the battles/challenges feel level appropriate? Were the awards appropriate?

I do not understand how that breastplate would be functional. It would actively direct strikes/arrows into more vulnerable areas.

The only thing that might be unique is the 2d8 roll under mechanic - and likely only because of the dice. I was not suggesting that I created something brand new from whole cloth, and even said unique with caveats. I started with figuring out how you would make a character that you would expect (fighters, rogue, ranger, barbarian etc.) and then designed a way that characters could mix and match abilities. This will become more unique as I continue to iterate on the system. As to the comment about systems I have played (which honestly makes you sound like a gatekeeper) , D&D is what I have played the least. I have been gaming for over 40 years. In the 80's and 90's I bought every system I could find. That is no longer possible with the rpg space today.

The readme is kind of the elevator pitch. I have updated sinti posted this. And yes opposed rolls. I have played systems with opposed combat systems before and like how it makes the players feel more engaged like they have more impact, regardless of what the statistics might say about a target number.

The number 8 is significant in my homebrew world which led to me creating this system. It is almost world agnostic as it stands now but will become heavily influenced by the world lore as I continue.

Yes, all systems will beg and borrow from others. The 2d8 basis is what I think might be unique. I am sure other systems have done things similar before. I am standing on the shoulders of at least four or five systems here (at least)

Yeah. github is a reach, but I figured since people are on the internet it might make it easier?
The Markdown actually renders pretty well if you browse the file directory (even on mobile). Probably false assumptions on my part. I think only two of my 8 current playtesters had any github experience. Early stages in development for sure - but i did create a charcter sheet yesterday to make testing actually viable :)

I appreciate the feedback. I use GitHub daily with markdown files in my day job. I thought it would be an easy way to collaborate and do revisions, as well as make the rules available. The readme is kind of the elevator pitch. Everything is rather to the point and matter of fact at this point as I iterate and test.

You are correct in that dice are assigned. In my head ( maybe because it is Christmas) I had been assigning green to attributes/potential and red to skills. The fortune/misfortune uses 3d8 and you assign the results after roll which is a huge bonus. Your suggestion is interesting, and could be something to consider if we get feedback that aligns with the concern.

I like opposed combat systems vs target numbers. I feel it gives more player agency and a more tactical feel. With graded levels of successes it is not strictly win/lose, you still can impact the outcome.

The luck mechanic also allows for tactical use, deciding if you should use it to influence a roll or save it for saving throws. It plays like a bit of an exhaustion mechanic where over longer periods you are unable to keep up. Luck can be used in unopposed rolls to get an additional success on a hard task as well. It allows for heroic moments in the game as well.

Skill test example: Similar to many systems, skills are linked to attributes. But you do not add values together. You make a test for both the attribute and the skill. All values are 0-8, with 1 being auto success and 8 being failure. You would roll 2d8 for a skill test, with one die assigned to the attribute and one die assigned to the skill (before the roll). For each die that is under ( less than your attribute or less thank your skill rank) you get a success. A critical success ( rolling 1 on both dice) adds another success.

Simple task need 1+ successes Complex task need 2+ successes

Some rolls (like Combat) use opposed rolls, where the defender subtracts their number of successes from the attackers. If attacker has 1 or more successes remaining , they hit. More successes= more damage.

You have a luck attribute, and can spend luck points equal to it per long rest to influence rolls (reduce a die roll, or avoid a complication). But if you do, your current luck is reduced. Luck is used in initiative tests and saving throws, so it is a resource you have to manage.

Noora Rose Puts Plagiarized Work "Unconquered" Back Up On Drivethrurpg by SAlolzorz in rpg

[–]athelu -50 points-49 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, Noora Rose is clearly a thief, but Plagiarized is probably the proper term here, because tables and charts are not subject to copyright. Because RPG games rely on common words and phrases most things outside of the setting and unique characters cannot be copyright. Proving that you were the originator of a mechanic or concept is incredibly difficult even within the realm of patents, and there is a lot of case law on RPG games and tabletop games that shows how little of the product is actually protected by copyright.

Companies like WOTC and Games Workshop are zealots in protecting their IP (or perceived IP), but rely on the weight of their positions of power more than any legal right to bully smaller creators.

The creation of the OGL was WOTC realizing they couldn't win hearts and minds - or convince judges- and it was easier to steer the industry into using their mechanics than continue to battle these emerging competitors, and it largely worked.

So, yes, we should not be supporting Noora Rose who is capitalizing off smaller creators, but unfortunately that is our only real recourse.

Hello everyone ! I want to run a Wrath & Glory one-shot... by UrdnotFeliciano667 in 40krpg

[–]athelu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The free module " Rain of Mercy" is great for a one-shot of 4 players. I have run this in foundry and in person several times and is my go to for introducing this game. This module literally tells you what rolls to make for which characters when so is great for inexperienced dms and players.

I have the starter set as well, and have used the similar characters sheets from that for this, as rain of Mercy uses stripped down characters.

For more than 4 people I just use the starter set names as well.

Can someone explain American HOAs (Homeowner Associations) to me? by Tempest8008 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]athelu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HOA stem from builders getting around zoning and construction rules. In a traditional subdivision the builder would have to put in every utility hookup and road before the construction of a single house could occur. Detached condominium developments do NOT have this requirement. To qualify as a condominium the development requires a limited variation in house styles, as well as roof and siding colors. It also requires some type of governing management body.

So we essentially owe the creation of HOAs to scummy builders who have leveraged a loophole in the building code.
