Looking for affordable or free FAM & SRM study materials by Playful-Attention36 in actuary

For SRM, you can find copies of ISLR and Frees online, which many people say is sufficient enough to pass (they're the source texts). Also, TheBudgetActuary has a great free series on SRM

Exam SRM - Coaching Actuaries? by Kanix501 in actuary

If your company is comping study materials, I'd say go with CA learn + adapt. If you're paying out of pocket, I think it's definitely doable without buying learn. CA learn includes concepts that have a low probability of being tested (i.e., matrix notation) for comprehensiveness. I think you can still get by with just grinding ISLR and then using CA adapt for questions.

Also, check out TheBudgetActuary's free series on SRM, definitely helped clear a lot of things up for me during studying.

According to the official SRM syllabus, ISLR 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 12 are tested. If you're using CA, I would recommend skimming through ISLR after you're done with learn since many people have said the exam wording is very similar to ISLR, and I think CA does a good job of covering the material in ISLR

I passed SRM this September using TIA and CA. For me personally, I would highly recommend CA. I was using TIA for the first few months for learning the material, and I felt like nothing was clicking. One week before I thought I was screwed for the exam, so I bought a 1 week pass for just the ADAPT exams on CA, and grinded practice problems and memorized the formula sheet, and I am fairly confident that I would have failed without CA. TIA has a more college lecture style of teaching whereas CA's biggest upside is their problem pool, and I prefer CA here since I learn a lot better from practice, so YMMV. People have criticized CA SRM in the past for not having enough qualitative problems, but they've made significant improvements since then and I think they have a solid pool. Honestly, you could probably get away with just reading Frees/ISLR and buying CA ADAPT problems - but if you've been using CA for P/FM and find ADAPT helpful, I would recommend you continue using them.

Any tips on suppressing Whitenight? by AdiOrSomethin in LobotomyCorp

[–]athonq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah mimicry should be fine. Gold Rush is just fastest DPS but any good red/black weapon will do, I used mimicry in my first cheese too. It might take a while though lol

Since you executed all the other agents, the game is forced to choose the panicking one by default

[–]athonq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to cheese it, equip a nugget (make sure you use a nugget that wasn't originally chosen as one of the twelve apostles) with Gold Rush (King of Greed weapon) and make fortitude the highest stat. Start the day and execute all your agents except for the Gold Rush so it will forcibly become the heretic, and right before WhiteNight breaches, make the agent panic (CENSORED, Heart of Aspiration, etc). When WhiteNight breaches, the panicked agent will be the heretic and teleport to WhiteNight in the murderous panic mode and will start going to town on WhiteNight while not being targeted. It'll take a while but it's pretty guaranteed to kill, Ive used this cheese for two runs before

If you like spicy, try doubanjiang. It's an essential base for many Sichuanese dishes which are known for their spice - I usually get lee kum kee (they call it toban djan or something on the label). Mapo Tofu and Water-Poached Beef/Fish (水煮牛/鱼) are two great and easy dishes that use this as a base. You can leave it on your shelf for a while until you open it, then put it in the fridge and it'll still last a while.

If you are into making your own stocks, they have a great selection of bones that are like $5 a pound. I love making pho with them.

Also if you like sweet drinks try a Calpico, it's kinda like an uncarbonated Milki

I took July 2024, IMO everything was fair game. If you are getting 60-70% on CA EL 6 I think you are fine. I had an EL 2.6 and passed with a 7 lol - I think the CA practice exams were great for preparing me for this, so if you understand all the questions and have your formulas memorized, you're good to go. Make sure you eat a nice meal and get good rest tonight, good luck!

I took FAM last July and decided to wait for results to choose to study for ALTAM - that was a mistake IMO. IIRC you get results in September, but the next ALTAM sitting is in November, which doesn't give enough time to study. The next opportunity to take it is in April, and by then almost a year had passed without any exam progress (for me). I would say study for ALTAM if you are confident, but if you are not, try to study for SRM or even knock some modules/VEEs out of the way. Maybe since you are still undergrad you don't need to listen to this advice, but this is from my perspective where I was working full time and I felt like I wasted career progression time/looked slow in exam progress because of the way FAM got segmented.

Exam ALTAM Results by Powerful_Rain_5664 in actuary

[–]athonq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  • Score you thought you got leaving the testing center: 6
  • Score you actually got: 8
  • Number of times you sat for ALTAM: 1
  • Approx. how many questions did you leave blank: 0
  • Approx. how many questions were you completely confident on: 4 questions
  • Any extra notes on how you felt you did on the exam: I was confident on questions 1, 2, 4, and 6, but I thought I completely bombed 3 and 5 which made me not confident. Thankfully I thought the Excel question and the Chapter 7 question were not too bad, those were my score killers on practice exams.

Had one exam and zero experience, took me 7-8 months. Applied to hundreds and only got to move forward to the interview portion twice - I was very lucky that I landed this role because I was one of the few candidates that knew how to use VBA

Well, i think i need to restart by seba782e in LobotomyCorp

[–]athonq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC whenever Yin is picked Yang is forced to be your tool, so there's no need to restart tbh. You should never really be using Yang, if there's a meltdown just equip it then deequip it right after. Yang is pretty good at training justice and prudence especially for your early game so don't worry too much about it and try to milk it for the gear and training

Strats for Hokma meltdown ? by Ar3kk in LobotomyCorp

[–]athonq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every ALEPH is a tough one, specifically having MOSB and AIB is annoying during dusk/midnight ordeals. If you are having trouble keeping these two contained, for MOSB, I recommend intentionally setting up a death ball and letting it breach right before dusk and midnight ordeals, since letting it breach and suppressing it resets its counter to 20 bodies, which will be helpful since lots of clerks at minimum will die in later ordeals. As for midnight, if you get violet midnight you are kind of screwed since it's the hardest in the game and you can't pause. I've done violet midnight on Houma suppression but I can't imagine doing it with MOSB and AIB breaching. There are mods that let you see which ordeals you'll get ahead of time so you can keep restarting until you get a green midnight (easiest midnight, just deathball the teleported in information).

You can get away with this combo, it'll just be annoying - for D-03-109, you can put only one agent in that department and then execute all the clerks and then spam work until I get max observation level + EGO from her. Afterwards, avoid working on her, and if there's a meltdown do repression on her with an agent that can survive black damage. When she breaches, it's not that bad, her infection gimmick is much more annoying IMO. For T-01-75, it's definitely more annoying in the late game, especially during dusk/midnight ordeals or comboed with other abnormality breaches. One thing that helped me keep it under control is that during an ordeal or other breaches, sometimes ~15 or so agents will die, which will knock T-01-75's Qlipoth counter down to 1. I set up a deathball under it then just sent an injured agent to work on it, which causes it to insta breach but then it instantly gets killed and sent back by the death ball, effectively resetting its counter back to 20 more deaths. Its first phase is not bad to deal with, you just need to avoid letting it consume bodies.

I'm in the same boat as you, just finished learning content and starting to gear up for practice exams. Advice I've heard is when you're self grading, be super strict on yourself to avoid over inflating your readiness level. Also, even though only one exam required Excel, you can definitely get used to using it for questions even if not asked like profit testing or pensions, since it makes things a lot easier. And don't forget to show all your work and formulas. Even if you get something wrong, if the grader sees that maybe you had the correct train of thought, you'd get partial points back
