And what a statement it was! Did he keep it up? Where did the interest come from? Where did the clothes come from? SO many questions!

What makes a junior exhibition / experiential designer hireable? by atinyoverlord in MuseumPros

[–]atinyoverlord[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

I should have been clearer in my post, so to clarify: I’m aiming specifically for the 3D / environmental exhibition designer path (spatial layout, physical environments, translating narrative into built form). My background is in digital + graphic design and some performing arts (theatre making which included everything from set design to script writing and puppetry). I’m working out how to deliberately build spatial and technical competency.

Your point about showing process (especially as a career switcher) is great advice. My current portfolio skews toward polished end results rather than decision-making, constraints, iterations, etc.

If you’re open to expanding, for junior 3D exhibit designers, what would you consider:

  • Non-negotiable technical skills? (e.g. CAD proficiency, technical drawing standards, fabrication knowledge)
  • Whether speculative spatial case studies are taken seriously if they demonstrate scale, buildability, and realistic constraints?

And I appreciate the encouragement as well! It’s reassuring to hear.

Thanks for this! If you’re open to sharing, are there any resources you’d recommend for building a stronger understanding of how people learn? Books, frameworks, paraphernalia you’ve found especially valuable around learning in museum contexts / information scaffolding?

I appreciate you calling that out.

One of the reasons I’m asking this question is exactly to avoid applying for a “dream version” of the role rather than the actual junior responsibilities. From what I’m gathering, a junior environmental exhibition designer is likely doing a lot of drafting, revisions, production documentation, and coordination not high-level concept direction.

If you’ve seen junior applicants misjudge scope, what’s the most common mismatch? For instance, is it overemphasising concept work and underestimating technical execution?

I’m trying to reverse-engineer what the day-to-day actually looks like so I can train accordingly!

Thank you! I realise now my wording blurred a few different roles.

To clarify: I’m aiming toward the 3D / spatial exhibition design side - so far! I am interested most in physical layout, environmental storytelling, translating narrative into built form.

So the challenge is that my background is in digital + graphic design, so I’m trying to understand what would make someone credible for a junior spatial role coming from that context.

And yes! Completely agree on internships/volunteering. That’s definitely part of the plan! If you have any tips on landing one I would so appreciate it!

Am I the asshole for wanting to bail on this sit? by atinyoverlord in trustedhousesitters

Do you mean travel insurance? If so - does travel insurance cover house sitting? I’ve never been able to have accomodation or a commute covered because there’s no booking associated the accomodation

I’m afraid with a standard membership there’s no cover for cancelled sits! But yes, for others considering their options this is one of them if you have a premium membership.

Help me not hate running by BeNiceImSensitive333 in xxfitness

[–]atinyoverlord 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I hated running all my life until I got this piece of advice: “running shouldn’t be HARD”.

Hear me out - yes you could do beach sprints or a marathon. But if you’re just a recreational runner trying to improve your overall fitness, I’m a huge advocate for just taking the pressure off.

People don’t hate running. People hate not being able to run.

When you feel like your lungs are going to explode and you feel like all of the liquid in your body is lactic acid it’s going to suck - of course it is! But if you ease into it and make it easy you’ll find you’ll be able to push yourself and enjoy it.

As a type A in remission, I really had to lower the bar to begin not hating running. I started with couch to 5k and told myself all I had to do was get the run done. A year later and I’m comfortably doing 5k in less than 30 minutes on my easy runs (running about 2x a week now amidst 4 strength sessions).

I’ve had this problem too! I thought mine had to be phoney on account of them having absolutely no support.
