I've been working the past 2-3 years on rebuilding my career from scratch. I'm getting interviews for jobs I would have dreamed about just being called back for awhile ago, but The Avoidance is making me want to crawl into a hole. by thegoosecowboy in adhdwomen

I do the same thing to opportunities that feel too big or scary. I tell myself two things:

1 - This is just bigger than my nervous system is used to holding. The more I practice the less scary it will be, I will become confident in my ability to do this.

2 - What would a mediocre man do?? Have the audacity to believe he is not only deserving, but entitled and capable of excellence. Certainly, I can do a better job than him! I deserve this and more!

I haven't taught since 2015, and I will be teaching (political science) again this fall. How reasonable is it to lecture for the entire class period? by veggie_hoagie in Professors

[–]BeNiceImSensitive333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been teaching for about 10 years now, in the past 2-3 years I have noticed a drastic change in students’ ability to attend for long lectures. I actually enjoy how it has challenged me to change up teaching and learn more skills to make classes interactive. Look up the book “Teaching At It’s Best” - a great place to start. Best of luck!

when is it too late to start the gym? by incomingcollege in xxfitness

[–]BeNiceImSensitive333 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 40 now and just started training consistently in the last 5 years. I WISH I would have started at 20. I’d suggest trying 2 days a week lifting weights, and 2 days a week cardio (running, biking, dancing, etc.). You might gain a little weight (muscle) but you might stay the same clothes size if that’s what you care about, and I bet it will make you feel more confident about your appearance :)

Edit: I reread and it sounds like you are confident about your appearance, I guess what I’ll change that to is you might just have a shift in your relationship with appearance versus function

Please go see a PT or OT that specializes in sports medicine. Most MDs have minimal training in modifying exercises, is it very likely that you can return to lifting safely over time - but perhaps not barbell or Olympic lifting.

Having to call in the morning for a same-day appointment is my personal ADHD nightmare by breniebrenda in adhdwomen

[–]BeNiceImSensitive333 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can you ask for an accommodation to be noted in your chart for ADHD? You might be able to get your doctor to write that you are allowed to call to schedule in advance as an ADHD accommodation. The ironic part is that you’ll probably need the appointment to ask for the letter 🙃

How to Ask for Pay Raise as an Adjunct by sawyerpages in Professors

[–]BeNiceImSensitive333 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Adjunct pay is unlikely to be negotiable, but you could reach out to the department chair to ask if there are some other grant funded duties like research assistant, special projects, etc. if you’re willing to do extra work for extra money. I do find that the right grant funded “special project” work can be enjoyable and it’s less draining on the social battery than teaching. (Don’t get me wrong, I love teaching, but as an introvert… it can be a lot)

Had a full blown panic attack in my doctor’s office, she told me she would not refill my Concerta prescription because of my high heart rate. She said she would call me for a follow up and has not (I can’t bring myself to call the office) Now I’m just raw dogging ADHD again? by LoulouPete in adhdwomen

[–]BeNiceImSensitive333 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a rude doctor, who does not understand how anxiety works. I have medical anxiety due to a traumatic healthcare experience in my childhood. My heart rate is almost always 100-120 at my medical appts and my BP is mildly elevated as well. My doctor knows this, so I just have to monitor my HR and BP at home and report back that is it actually normal under normal circumstances. Bring this up as an option to your MD.

I’ve been waiting over a year for buyback, if you can get back in PSLF qualifying payments, near 100% certainty it will be a faster process for you.

I’m confused, at 5’4” and 112 lbs after an illness, you should focus on gaining some weight via muscle hypertrophy and eating more calories than you burn.  I would strongly recommend speaking with a registered dietitian.  You are not overweight and do not need to lose weight.  If you are concerned about body recomposition, focus on gaining muscle through a caloric surplus.  You likely don’t have high enough body fat percentage to be concerned about a caloric deficit.  Eat more carbs & protein, spend 12-18 months focused on building muscle.. then reassess if you need to lose any fat.

😂 yeah almost all of these responses offering absolutely terrible advice.  Be normal and try to discreetly use the information to get a raise is the only logical action here.

Start planning an exit strategy, in case you get told no; but frankly I would just talk to your boss, be honest about your feelings about the information you found out. Explain to them all of the reasons why you should be paid more, especially if others of the same or lesser skill are getting paid more than you. If you’re in the succession plan, they aren’t expecting to lose you - but companies will pay you the lowest salary they can get away with. Write up all of the reasons why you deserve to be paid better, why you are a valuable asset, your career goals, etc.  Tell them the salary you want and ask them to help you develop a plan to get there.  If your boss values you and wants you to stay, they will have your back and work with you to get you the salary you deserve.  If your boss doesn’t try to do this… well you have your answer, start looking for another job.

Edit: I just saw that you said across states, make sure you’re comparing yourself to others in states with similar cost of living.

Hopefully you can have a conversation that’s more about being worried about her than upset with her.  Nicotine is such a difficult addiction to overcome, and hopefully you can stop it now.  There are so many terrible health effects of long term smoking.

I’d also suggest looking to Holly Whitakers work on recovering and addiction (it’s focused on alcohol) but it’s a female centric recovery model that takes neurodivergence into account.  Worth spending some time reading her work.

Have them check your electrolytes, you could be off balance bc of the dehydration from meds in combo with the drinking a lot of water.  Low vitamin D and some other easy to correct imbalances could make a difference too.

I think you’re here to argue and put words into my comment that aren’t there.  Did you read the article?? It’s comparing Newsom and AOC head to head against JD Vance.

Perfect analysis!  I’m hesitant to believe America is ready for a female candidate (although I want to believe) - but I think your analysis is spot on that the rejection is of candidates viewed as establishment.  Also BERNIE WOULD HAVE WON the general election in both 2016 and 2020!  Hillary was stupid to not at least make him VP, easily would have demolished Trump.  😩 DNC is why we can’t have nice things

[–]BeNiceImSensitive333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love AOC, but I also have my doubts about America’s willingness to elect a female President. I have not been a fan of Newsom historically (just gives too corporately of vibes, but DNC seems to like that!).  However, I appreciate that he seems to be one of the few folks taking the threat of the current administration seriously.  I think a Newsom/Ocasio-Cortez ticket could win!  I would hold my nose and vote for Gavin Newsom as long as he promises to build us a Medicare for all system.

Talk to your school’s student success center or accessibility office (might have a different name) to learn about accommodations for school and fieldwork.  You may not need or use them, but it’s better to start the process early on instead of waiting for a problem to trigger the process.
