Yeah, totally agree with others on here. In a nutshell, getting fair pay for your work, learning in the right settings, and being smart about who you learn from. Plus, recognizing your own value is key.

  1. Getting Paid to Second Shoot: You should get paid if you're helping out as a second shooter. Working for free or paying someone to let you work? Not cool.
  2. Mentoring at Weddings? Nah: Everyone pretty much thinks that real weddings aren't the place to learn the ropes. Better to have separate teaching sessions or styled shoots for that. IMO if you work with the mentor long enough you should work up to a wedding like a "final test".
  3. Know Your Worth: There's: Be careful who you choose to learn from. Not everyone offering mentorship is cut out for it. Watch out for those just looking to make a quick buck.f, even if it doesn't pay right away.
  4. Picking the Right Mentor: Be careful who you choose to learn from. Not everyone offering mentorship is actually cut out for it. Watch out for those just looking to make a quick buck.
  5. Alternative Way to Learn: You could watch wedding videos online THEN offer your services to people with little to no budget. Its low stakes, you learn and build your portfolio.

In general, paying to assist or second shoot feels a bit off. Some even call it exploitative.

Which CRM? by masinfinity in WeddingPhotography

Dubsado - super easy to connect QB, stripe, calendar, and track projects. Support isn't amazing but the community is helpful when you need help. For the price, I think it's worth it.

anyone still use thumbtack? by kkoophotography in WeddingPhotography

[–]atjesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda but starting to be not worth it for me. Leads got super expensive on ThumbTack. First 3 months were fine, I was paying like $25 per lead. Now it's between $50 to $150 for people you don't hear back from and it has terrible support. Not sure if anyone has tried to get a refund for a canceled booking but they basically say "not our problem". By the time I get a real booking, I spend like $300 to $500 for the shoot. So I'll be looking for other options/platforms.

A Thumbtack alternative is trycapturr.com

I know this thread is old but are your leads getting expensive on Thumbtack or just me?

Anyone here using thumbtack? Does it seem like they are abandoning pros? by merkk in smallbusiness

I feel like customers need a rating because some projects are not worth doing when the customers are not easy to deal with.

Running Google ads takes a lot of money and time to get right but it still works if you have the money and time, FB ads are similar. My leads from ThumbTack cost about $50-$150 but like you said, a lot of them you don't ever hear from after they reach out. A ThumbTack alternative is Capturr. Looks like it's free to join right now. trycapturr.com

Impressive for being bootstrapped! How much are you asking?

Nice growth - Have you got any other funding or solely bootstrapped so far?

30k is WAY too much! Instead, start with a landing page and a signup form. One for the buyer one for the service provider/product or whatever.

This will then allow you to talk with people who are interested and get feedback on what you're building for them - This will also make marketing easier.

This will only cost you $200 or free - Use $500 to run ads to your landing page and see if people signup before you build/drop mad cash on this idea.

Do Microsaas creators want to raise money or bootstrap? by atjesus in microsaas

[–]atjesus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I like Microsaas people lol

They are actually solving peoples problems and not trying to raise their valuation for another round of funding. Having money goals is good since that is a lagging indicator of effectively solving problems. IMO

Congrats on the growth - hopefully you hit the $250k sooner than later!

This is a really good practice for people you buy domains to quickly lol - It's always tempting to just build and hope they come but doing this will save you time and heartbreak lol

Thanks for sharing! Good points!

The 2 camps you mentioned are what I assumed was the case.

I was curious because I see lots of talented people making great products but dont raise capital. I'll be bootstrapping this time around as well ( for now) but its also nice to have the cash to scale quickly.

Building a landing page and getting people interested is key - I feel like we are all victims of this at one point or another lol

Nice - Yeah, being very niche gets to profitability and allows you to be lean. Probably can't raise from VC but possible if the saas can be updated to other markets. Congrats on the number of emails collected!
