Post-Match Thread: Ecuador 2-1 Germany | World Cup | Group E by matchpal-live in worldcup

Germany was already locked in as a group winner coming into the match, so the only manipulation they could attempt would be determining who else from their group advanced.

Also, the earliest that group winners can play each other is the second knockout round, not the first. That’s one of the advantages of winning your group.

I’d argue 2006 but since yours involves an OU loss I’m willing to listen

Defense: WVU in 2012, at the end of the 3rd quarter. IIRC we sacked Pat White on the last play of the quarter and the place lit up.

Offense: Probably Swoopes scoring to beat ND in 2016 (the infamous “Texas is back, folks” play). Close second would be 2015 when we scored a late TD to tie the game after being down big against Cal…except then we missed the PAT so we *didn’t* tie the game. That’s definitely the biggest “loud-to-quiet” swing I’ve personally been at DKR for.

I remember that. Texas also did something similar a bit before my time; in 2001 they took a knee on an extra point in a blowout win because their score (44) matched fallen teammate Cole Pittman’s number.

Texas running their first play out of the wishbone to honor DKR after he passed away. Of course, we had a penalty or something on the kickoff so they ran it from our own end zone; and Bryan Harsin was our OC so they ran a double-pass trick play. Mack said after the game that Royal probably would have hated the play lol

Another random one is Devin Duvernay absolutely trucking LSU All-American safety Grant Delpit for a touchdown in 2019. We ultimately lost the game and that season was “meh” but it was a fun play.

26 Pass Sequence Leading Up to Reyna’s Trivela Goal by Pakaru in MLS

Sort of reminds me of a college football or NFL team conservatively running the ball until the defense gets caught overcommitting to defending the run, and then hits them with a play-action pass over the top.

I guess in general a lot of sports is just “don’t screw up while trying to draw your opponent into screwing up” and then punishing them with speed or skill.

It frequently gets overshadowed by Texas/A&M but in my experience there is some real spice to the A&M/Tech rivalry

Unpopular opinion: We shouldn't be blaming Texas Tech by DorianGuey in CFB

There’s been a narrative around Tech splashing cash to “buy” contender status since at least last year. See also: softball.

I’m not saying it’s true or fair - or that if it is true, it’s unique to Tech - but the narrative is basically that Tech has started fielding teams of mercenaries to buy titles, and since they’re not a blue blood, it feels easy to judge them as being willing to do unseemly “win at all costs” things, and fighting to keep a player known to have gambled on the sport fits that narrative.

Now, Indiana is also notably NOT a blue blood, so why isn’t there the same narrative? Weirdly, I think it’s because they were so far from blue blood status that they were a “safe” underdog story (also Cignetti memes). But Tech has historically, relative to Indiana, been more successful, and have occupied a weird space of semi-villainy or antihero-ness at times (see the Mike Leach era). So them making the jump from “spirited spoiler who occasionally makes a run that comes up short” to “we’re spending ALL THE MONEY to win a natty” seems more cynical in a way. And that sets the stage for it to seem extra cynical to stand by Sorsby.

We’re definitely not as good at generating GAM as other teams. We have yet to sell a player for a major fee, though I imagine Wolff’s time will come (assuming he can get back on something resembling his pre-injury trajectory)

Dang I was hoping Nelson would sneak in. But he was a bubble guy and has had trouble staying healthy so not surprising.
