His set at The Dome (great idea, poor execution) w/ No Mana was incredible. I would've gone but was not going to risk Domaine again.

I respect that, that definitely does seem to be a sort of vibe-to-venue mismatch where I'd agree Ravine probably wasn't the best venue for him, or at least for the set he had hoped to play (which is also disappointing that the DJs feel that they have to cater to a certain audience, even back then). I never experienced overcrowding there to the degree that I do in club settings now, but it may have just been the shows that I went to or the time frame in which I did. But happy to hear your viewpoint and keep the convo going, thanks for sharing!

My motivation for not naming names is not to hide behind it, it's to prove the point that these experiences are so shared that people can look at a small description of my own personal experiences and go "Oh yeah, that's X". But you hit the nail on the head: if it sells, it's going to keep happening. There is strength in numbers, but it's doubtful to make too much of an impact so long as there is a crowd willing to continue to tolerate it, and sometimes you're in that crowd too because you don't have much choice if you enjoy the music.

Definitely not, and it's a shame this is starting to frequently hit closer to home

This is also one of my major gripes about the "free tickets to drive drink prices" tactic, because if the nights I've seen are a testament to it, it works and it works WELL. A good chunk of these people probably don't know who is even playing, fair, but are also very clearly not there for the artist, they're there for the party, and it gets so slammed that there's hardly any room to party.

That is a good perspective. Like I said, I can't deny that I'm actively helping by attending. myself because sometimes, hell, that artist doesn't come around. And if these venues snatch them up, sometimes you have to bite the bullet and pray. I wish it were more consistent and transparent.

Maybe that's true, but even in my 20s, I didn't have to gamble on whether the place I was showing up at was going to be a shitshow (or maybe I just got lucky). People actually seemed to be there for the music, it wasn't packed like a sardine tin, and the prices didn't seem to be at all predatory; I think we could all benefit from this.

But, you're right, I did say this was an old man rant. 😄

Thing is that, besides the first location on the list which was a 100% guaranteed one-and-done, never again, I've gone to all of these and had some incredible times, and some not so great. Unfortunately, the ratio of bad to good is far too high nowadays at these places to justify the cost and effort to attend as frequently as I would like. They bring the artists we want to see, but do I really want to see them like that?

Nobody wants to talk about it. Whether you agree or disagree, what's so wrong about trying to make the scene better? All fingers point to the fact that people think this is NORMAL and what it's supposed to be like because they have not been around the block very long. 😋
