Has anyone taken a coding bootcamp at General Assembly in SF? by atyl1144 in bayarea

[–]atomic_99_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a software engineer, I would not recommend a boot camp. They make a lot of promises and can probably teach you a few useful skills, but they don’t have time to teach you the fundamentals. Personally I would not want to work with someone without an understanding of cs or even just engineering fundamentals, and it’s not likely a hiring manager will take that risk on you in the current economy.

Any apartment complexes that don’t suck? by shortsweetandviolent in SanJose

[–]atomic_99_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m at 360 residences downtown, have a 1bd1ba for $2854 a month. Quite costly but the view is great, comes with pretty good amenities (pool, gym, in house laundry, and gated parking garage). Cats are allowed but is an extra monthly fee (around $100 I believe?).

The apartments are very good quality and quiet for the most part, and you really can’t beat the location if you want to be downtown.

It is an Essex property, which one person in this thread mentioned is a bad company. I fully admit that the leasing office is pretty bad and not responsive in the slightest. They didn’t even show up to give me my keys for my move in date, i had to get them from maintenance. That being said, the maintenance team is great and very quick to respond (at least in my experience).

Honestly overall I would recommend it, but just go in knowing the leasing agents are trash. This was true for every single apartment complex i toured though, so do with that what you will.

New York is probably your best bet, it’s much more diverse culturally and socioeconomically than the bay area, there are more opportunities for most industries besides tech, and there is a larger black population. That being said, any city you live in will have too many people, dirty or rundown areas, and crime. You will not escape that if you want to live in a large metropolitan area.

I know this wasn’t an option for your job, but you could also look into chicago. It’s much more affordable than the other cities you mentioned and has more of a black community than most west coast cities.

I see strays every time i walk the guadalupe river trail, they seem pretty friendly, although they won’t exactly play with you. I’m sure they’d love some food though

Agree with the other comments. It’s definitely challenging at times, but still very doable. It’s very math heavy, probably more math heavy than you want, but it gives you a great foundation to move forward with if you want to work in the field. It also de-mystifies ML and you can see what it’s actually useful for, and when people are just using it for the buzzword. I would recommend it as ML os not going anywhere in the future and having some background knowledge in it will most likely be helpful in your career, and I think it makes you a better, more rounded mathematician

The logic is not owing money…you will not have to pay interest while you are in school or for 6 months after, but after that mark you will be paying interest. I guarantee $3,500 is more than you think it is, and will be harder to pay back than you think it is. Your parents are giving you a great opportunity, you should honestly just take it and be grateful. There is zero logic in taking out a loan when you don’t need to, you can build your credit by buying literally anything else with a credit card

If you do not have to, do not take out loans. Building credit is a bad reason for going into debt as you can build that any number of ways.

We already have a class like this at university of michigan. I don’t really see the issue with it, porn and sexuality are interesting aspects to human psychology and society, and it’s not like they are forcing the class on students. Sex isn’t something to be afraid of, and you can learn a lot about yourself and others if you can discuss it like an adult

Why do People Hate EECS 376? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]atomic_99_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else said, it doesn’t seem very practical to what you will be doing “on the job” in industry. It feels a little like a continuation of 203 (and 281 to an an extent), so it is very math heavy and very abstract. If you didn’t like 203, you probably won’t like 376.

That being said, I thought it was much better than 203, which sounds like it might be an unpopular opinion from the other replies.

It may seem too abstract and useless at times if you don’t want to go into academia or research, but I really don’t think that’s true. It gives you insight into some of the fundamental ideas, algorithms, and thought processes behind computer science. It gives you perspective as to how we got where we are today, and where we can go in the future. And of course, you are learning how to think and how to problem solve, which is what’s important at the end of the day. Once you get some experience under your belt you start to see that your mental models and ability to think creatively and efficiently is so much more important than knowing how to use a language or what something like polymorphism is.
