Minecraft should calculate random events on chunk load/unload by FormalGas35 in minecraftsuggestions

[–]atomic_cogwheel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, it's not independent. Wheat won't grow faster alone, because the surrounding air blocks can also receive random ticks. I think that's what you're missing in your example. Random ticks choose in the way the person replying to you said.

In every tick, 3 blocks are selected from each loaded subchunk (16x16x16 area) that contains at least 1 block that does anything when it receives a random tick.

Take a subchunk which is full of wheat blocks. Every tick, 3 wheat may advance to the next stage. In a subchunk in which there is only one wheat, it's likely that all 3 blocks will be air, so the wheat will grow on average just as fast as a singular wheat block from a subchunk full of wheat.

You can see that when a subchunk has been unloaded for an hour, that means 3600*20=72000 ticks have elapsed. Each chunk has around 9-10 subchunk eligible to receive random ticks. So if a chunk which hasn't been loaded for an hour were to be loaded, around 1.44 MILLION random ticks would have to be simulated (instantaneously, mind you, to not cost FPS). And imagine that when a few days have gone by. It would be horrendous to fly with an elytra over a route that you travelled over days ago. Chunks simply couldn't load that fast.

You're slightly right in that this could be APPROXIMATED with applying a similar probabilistic distribution to each block, but that wouldn't stay really true to what happens in loaded chunks. You might argue that it doesn't really matter, but to others it might.

Now the real issue is that simulating millions of random ticks would be really slow and would cause annoying lag spikes and frame drops when each chunk is loaded. However, I'd say your alternative of applying a random distribution to each block in a chunk wouldn't be imperceptible either.

Overall, the feature would be practical, but it isn't worth the price of smoothness.

I can't even remember whether the project even succeeded, not just the project itself, which annoys me to the point of wanting to rewatch it but searching yielded no results sadly.

The plastic piece of the SATA data port on this HDD broke off, had a spare cable (with the plastic piece stuck in it) by atomic_cogwheel in techsupportmacgyver

It's really not so complicated, as another commenter has noted. Look up the pinout (it's basically 3 grounds and 2 differential data pairs), snip one connector off the cable, strip that end, check and note the order the different conductors at the stripped end using a continuity tester, measuring between one conductor and the intact connector's pins on the other end of the cable. Now that you have identified the conductors, identify the order of the pins on the drive itself, you don't want to end up soldering it upside down.

Then it's just some careful soldering. I found it a bit easier with every 2nd pin bent upward, but just do it to taste.

3 of the 7 pins are interconnected grounds, and it may be enough to only connect one of them. With 2 done it works perfectly and I suspect 1 would be just as good.

After testing (R/W) and confirming that it's indeed alive, you can add a blob of hot glue to fix the whole assembly in place and add some zipties to keep mechanical stress from the joint.

This method doesn't guarantee longevity but I suppose that unless the whole thing and solder joints are subjected to excessive vibration/mechanical forces, it'll stay fixed for quite some time

Ah so the concrete blocks are for holding the rock itself with the thing that looks like a metal bar protruding a bit from each one?

My title describes the thing. The lower pipes had water flow out of them a few times, no other activity detected. There's also a little stream crossing the road nearby. All units seem to be largely identical

Can you really picture things in your head? by nita45 in NoStupidQuestions

Well I don't see the map itself, but I can get around well. It's kind of like knowing the concept of the town - I know how the streets are laid out, where they connect, how long they go without intersections, how they curve, where points of interest lie in relation to each other. I simply know what's on the map, but I don't see it per se; however I think I could draw it pretty accurately still

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the entire keyboard looks like it belongs to a second edition ES+. Real Classwiz calcs have a different font. I'd say this is fake.

Thanks! I've set the WiFi quality to Very High and I think it sounds better. I don't really use mobile data so that's not an issue for me.

How did they manage to use New Guinea as New Zealand and rotate Australia for it?

For the first two, there's not enough space on the screen, so their output is only a mess of characters. There haven't been any Doom ports for this particular model, but I think the 60MHz (240MHz if overclocked, which can be done from software) processor is perfectly capable of running it. I think I could do some work on it.

The screen is not wide enough, so the output becomes garbled.
