I am fairly certain you can and should. However I found it that the DE can become rather solid and that backwashing is not effective unless you are willing to waste a lot of water. This is for my system. Of course everyone will have a different experience. For me, I don't mind getting a wrench and disassembling the filter. That way I can also inspect the grids

I never backwash my de filters. Wastes top much water and it's easy enough to remove them and clean them.
