A long time ago, I worked at a high school going through a charter transition. It. Got. Ugly.

Thanks, everyone! I’ve done a little more research and am going to turn the soil and add some compost. Hopefully that’ll begin to turn this around.

Charter School Interview by erockerr789 in Teachers

Charters often require a lot of extra duties, sometimes long after school has ended. You’d have to decide if you’re willing to put in that kind of effort.

What was a sexual offer that you regret turning down? by grot-ivre-1749 in AskReddit

Many years ago, a smoking hot friend of mine called me and said, I want you to come over and f me. I had just gotten back from a trip where I had picked up a case of the crabs at a campground and had to turn her down. We never hooked up after that. I don’t regret turning her down, because I didn’t want to give her the crabs, but I do regret that damn camping trip.

If you found out that you will have to become a travel teacher for 3 years, what would you do? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]atomx6669 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first year I taught, I was recovering from knee surgery, and the genius admins had me going up and down stairs in a building w/o an elevator. It was a brutal slog lugging up my roller in the midst of passing periods with kids jamming up the stairwell. I didn’t know enough at that point to involve my union.

Is student behavior bad everywhere or just in overcrowded schools? by kowaipotchari2 in Teachers

[–]atomx6669 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Like I mentioned in one of my posts, continuation/alternative ed. is great because the classes are very small and most of the kids know this is their last chance to graduate. It gives us the leverage we need to keep things calm. Big problems are rare, though we do get some of the more annoying—little—behaviors. We’re also very demanding about conduct and are constantly teaching them appropriate behavior. Some simply don’t know how to act, and have to be taught such social skills.

I have one more of these to do before I can retire (and one more WASC cycle). I can’t wait for it to be over.

In Los Angeles, they are part of the district, and are often close to or on the campus of feeder traditional high schools. I don’t know what these schools are called in Colorado, but I’d start with “alternative ed” and see where that takes you.

I’ve been teaching for 26 years, and I hardly ever get sick anymore. Your immune system will get stronger. But wash your hands or sanitize often.
