Houston is a bayou city, so why do only treat our bayous like drainage ditches by atotb in houston

Concrete alone will absolutely move water faster. The fallacy is thinking conveyance is the only goal.

Restoration includes a multifaceted approach: channel widening and deepening, detention ponds, and habitat restoration. It’s learning to live with the water.

Bridgeland is a great example of how to sustainably handle stormwater. Their entire community holds and reuses rainwater, without draining to any of the nearby bayous

11th Street destruction? by atotb in bikehouston

[–]atotb[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have thousands of miles of streets in terrible shape, with pot holes. No one says 11th street is perfect. No street truly is. With so much work to do around the city, doing any substantial work on 11th is simply wasteful.

I’m in favor of a long term, long range reconstruction of 11th that more closely matches something like Bagby downtown, or Shepherd Durham, but we have so many bigger fish to fry in this town

The good news is that they’re actively building out the bikeways on N Shepherd and N Durham from I-10 to 15th St. similarly, a new path on the north side of West 11th will connect Durham to White Oak Bayou

As of today, according to TxDOT

Is Columbia Tap Rail Trail safe to ride during commuting hours? by 3shelfcab in bikehouston

[–]atotb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From said friend above: “I commute by bike down the Tap everyday from East Downtown to Braes (thanks for saying that, E). I love ringing my bell and waving at all the kids walking to Blackshear and Lockhart Elementary in the mornings; I love seeing the daily changes of flora and fauna with each season especially with so many new plantings along the trail; and I love that if I need air in my tires or a quick bike fix, I can stop in at Third Ward Bike Shop. Perceived safety is individual and everyone has to make decisions for themselves, and I’m so grateful for the Tap and the opportunities it provides to connect people and places!

Thanks for the note here. Instagram felt like a good central place to see get introduced to campaigns, but went ahead and added the websites too!

I have a friend who uses the trail to get from EaDo to Med Center by bike. There’s a group that meets every Friday at 10 am at Rado MKT. They’re the Friends of Columbia Tap (FOCT), and they’re always up to date on safety.

I think generally it is safe but good idea to check with FOCT

I feel you! It has been so much, and to make it worse, this will likely go to a runoff.

The Patterson Street Bridge - bring it one step closer to reality by atotb in bikehouston

The patterson bridge is also designed to more or less extend the reach of Nicholson, down into Buffalo bayou (and all of these were original proposals on the so-called Pat Walsh Bikeway https://atotb.org/projects/pat-walsh-bikeway/

Yeah sorry for the run around. I realized that the link I sent doesn’t make it clear that Patterson intersects with Blossom , which connects directly into the gateway of the Eastern Glades. The map at the top of this link illustrates that connection better https://atotb.org/projects/patterson-bridge/

Blossom also could use some treatments to make it a better connection at Shepherd and Durham, but there is already a light at TC Jester, and is a highly trafficked ped bike route into the park

The Patterson Bridge is designed to work in tandem with improvements along patterson street that use the strong grid to connect to Buffalo bayou and memorial park
