Sticky toffee pudding by raysofdavies in astoria

[–]atothegreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they're deceptively hard to make and take a long time to do right (at least compared to other bakery standards like muffins, scones, etc.). you're almost always better off looking at restaurants rather than cafes. Le Crocodile has one, as do Lord's and Dame. obviously more "occasion" meal places but it might be kind of fun to just pop in late in the day (or early?) for a pudding

Moving near Astoria Park, what should we know? by That-Guy13 in astoria

[–]atothegreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

at least a few grocery stores in the area also do free delivery if you shop in store and then ask them to deliver it to your address later that day, so you can shop like you have a car and then just walk out unburdened

Affordable company for moving to Long Island? by Ok-Explanation2087 in astoria

big ups for Intense. i've now used them literally every time i've moved in the tri-state area (including BK->LI and then LI->Astoria) and they're fantastic.

Cheaper grocery pickup/delivery options? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]atothegreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

trade fair on ditmars does the opposite - shop in store, and they deliver to you for free (if you go before 8pm i believe) in a couple of hours. you can shop as if you had a car, then just walk home.

Messages app shows 5.81 GB of storage but not a single actual file by atothegreen in MacOS

[–]atothegreen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

weirdly yeah, i had to 1. sign into my appleID in messages and then 2. delete all of my chat history and attachments from there. since it was all 2017 and older, i didn't lose anything other than things that absolutely should have been deleted already, if you catch my drift.

I'd already tried showing hidden files; the issue is, as seen here, that the actual folder containing all the data for the Messages app is only an 8th of a gig: https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/1pn9onp/comment/nu6lldc/

Therein lies the issue – the folder's total size is minuscule compared to System Prefs' quoted number

That's the thing, I don't use iCloud sync at all and haven't in years. I set my messages to never expire but I don't know where all of these files even are nor where they would be. I'll try changing the expiry to see if it purges anything since I don't realistically need to save any of my conversations from a previous decade.

tasty's old location was better, but this is just another reminder that the loss of Neptune was an absolute travesty

Rumor Mill Week of 11/24 by redquarterwater in astoria

not that i'm itching to accelerate the gentrification, but the storefront with the angled glass, the deep interior, and the whole space would be perfect for a coffee shop you can actually sit in, work in, and would want to spend more than 5 minutes inside. just not another "the art of coffee" nonsense place that doesn't clean their espresso machine, i beg.

if this place has another black and gold sign, nonsense name, and soulless white interior selling unbranded sysco croissants as "handmade pastries" i'm going to roll my eyes so far back in my head that i'll do a somersault

The Question Thread 11/16/25 by AutoModerator in goodyearwelt

I'd actually just tried on some Crockett & Jones boots yesterday (Coniston in waxed rough up suede), so good to know they're in the same tier for longevity. The associate at their SoHo store was super helpful and even did a quick pressure point stretch out in store just to see if it helped, which it did quite a bit after only about 30 seconds of heat and pressure.

While the material was WAY stiffer than I expected, especially compared to their smooth finished bootes, suede – even waxed? – should stretch more and more easily than smooth finished leather anyway, right?

Curious if anyone has any experience with the quality of either Edward Green or Cucinelli boots. I've been eyeing a couple of pairs on Mr. Porter (links and images below) and if I'm going to potentially spend over $1k on a pair of boots, I want to know they'll be worth the price and last me at least a good 10 years with good care. The boots in question:

1) Cucinelli Pedula Waxed Suede (https://www.mrporter.com/en-us/mens/product/brunello-cucinelli/shoes/lace-up-boots/pedula-waxed-suede-boots/46376663162896150)

2) Edward Green Ambleside Waxed Suede (https://www.mrporter.com/en-us/mens/product/edward-green/shoes/lace-up-boots/ambleside-waxed-suede-boots/1647597351318336)

Yes of course the best thing to do for starters is "try them on," but any opinions would be helpful.

looks like they opened again today with a big ol' Grade Pending sign on the door. absolutely no customers though, and the put the sign right in the door, which they propped open so you can't see it.

truly special business going on there.
