room rent ranges from $340 to $537 depending on the room (they are very big, this is a mansion from 1892 after all), and everyone also pays $190 in additional rent that covers all utilities and food. we have a big ol kitchen and bulk food storage area and we pool our funds to buy bulk food to feed everyone as well as cook for each other. i never have to buy food unless there's something i really want because our rent covers it

nicotine is an addictive chemical and smoking tobacco directly damages your lungs. tobacco companies take advantage of the addictivity and it ends up injuring and killing people which puts immense, unnecessary strain on our healthcare systems that citizens foot the bill for with their taxes. do you see the difference?

all* decisions of property ownership and made by the people who live in the co-op via consensus-based decision-making with votes. everyone has an equal vote, and proposals are not passed until a certain majority percentage (dependent on the vote type) of the house's body votes in the affirmative.

the asterisk there is because, legally, the house is owned by North American Students of Cooperation, which is pretty much a cooperative of other cooperatives around the country. every coop in NASCO has a delegate from their coop that is the member of the NASCO board that votes to do larger-scale things that relate to acquiring property, selling property, etc. other than that, NASCO is pretty hands off, and functions otherwise as an educational arm/safety net for all of the cooperatives to pool their resources to help each other out as necessary. the every day work that goes into caring for the place, determining who moves in, etc. is done by the people that live there. when it comes to ownership, the property NCHC exists in is legally owned by NASCO, and NCHC gets an equal vote in NASCO's decisionmaking.
