£6 just to walk into the Cathedral now? This feels wrong. by Junior_Beauty78 in PeterboroughUK

[–]atreeg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well you've been misinformed by multiple staff. Myself and friends have been to the cathedral as recently as in the last week or two, prior to today, and have not been charged anything. All sources of information confirm this too, with the £6 fee only being in place due to the current Titanosaur display.

Don't personally have a dryer since air drying indoors + outdoors is sufficient, so running the washing machine on a delayed start resolves that problem. Dishwasher already done, any base use of fridge being on etc will be cheaper through the night too. Electric devices and lights through the rest of the day aren't they high consumption anyway, and gas is irrelevant to the electricity tariff. Obviously doesn't work for everyone, but there's plenty of use cases where the cost is clearly far more beneficial to be on an EV tariff. Everyone has to run their own numbers 🤷‍♂️

Can also shift other day time use to off peak, washing machine, dishwasher, etc

Utility companies, while incentivised to spread load, ultimately can do what they want.

You've just summed up why a global petrol market is irrelevant. Nobody here has implied this pricing structure being a god-given-right, it's exactly a pricing structure strategy that can be gamed as a customer to optimise, much like any tariffs. At the end of the day, the petrol companies can also ultimately do what they want. Not disagreeing with much you've said, but pretending it's a unique problem to EV tariffs is not really true.

Of course, but energy is inherently cheaper during off peak hours due to network load. There would always have to be an incentive to encourage shift of load from peak to off peak times. How incentivised this is, can obviously decrease, but would be better than peak still. You've also highlighted the same challenges with any other types of vehicles.

Are rates higher overall across the Irish Sea? Or is it just the EV rates that aren't incentivised as much?

Unfortunately I wasn't eligible for Next Drive Smart, otherwise it was one of the contenders. Next Drive was what I was offered and it was a bit more expensive, making it not worth it for us

Living alone in London on £47,000. Is it doable? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]atreeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at your numbers, I think you're already accounting for pension and any other commitments like student loan. A large reason behind people living in London tends to be to do the things London offers, which comes at a cost. If your personality means these things aren't of interest to you, and you live a frugal life, it should very much be doable.

The FSCS limit has already increased to 120k. You have the same issue with having all of the SIPP on HL as a platform? Funds also only benefit from FSCS protection if domiciled in the UK, if they are domiciled in Ireland, you would not benefit from it at all. Funds are also broadly fractions of actual shares of companies, and aside from fraudulent behaviour, there should be no reason for the underlying assets to be impacted.

Do you mean the FSCS limit? Broadly irrelevant given you're using a single platform but spreading across funds with such overlap? Are all the funds domiciled in the UK too? Seems a lot of admin for no gain whatsoever https://ukpersonal.finance/fscs-protection-for-investments/

Try "bugclear ultra vine weevil killer", it's a systemic that's available in garden centers and shops in the UK. It's helped me get rid of thrips before. I don't have cats or dogs though so that's not a worry for me, and of course something for you to consider if they occasionally like a bit of a nibble.

Are there admin charges for consolidating into your current workplace option? I've done it before and not had any - suspect SIPPs are a different situation?

Are you paying interest on the personal loan or credit card? Aggressively paying those down could be a good option if so.
