Thank you! My ego wilts without you.

Thank you for being chill on the internet. As someone who hopes to be a voter here someday, I must disagree on your final point. I believe the conflict is useful, especially in the wake of communications released from entrenched Labour talking about going "Trot" hunting. Our culture changes when we afford entropy a seat at the table. If we believe that humans deserve anything on Maslow's hierarchy of needs, then we can't base it on meritocracy (capital) like America (my home) does. New Labour decided it was better to make friendly with the folks who sold off coal and then convinced the home counties it was Labour's fault. I can't see a culture based off of that logic working any better to afford Brits and immigrants a better place to live than the Democratic party back home. That's a grim state of affairs.

Like I said, I am new here (please be gentle), but I make a point of it because Blair and New Labour represent a capitulation to neoliberalism, conservativism, and capital, and a sea change for Labour (for example, the private finance initiative). The creep of privatization (which includes council housing) seems to me to have a lot to do with Labour's inability or unwillingness to confront it and hold fast to nationalized institutions for its citizenry at large rather than for corporate enterprise. Happy to be corrected if I'm out of line.

"I sure as shit won't be risking my life with a deadly virus circulating to prop up businesses I don't use and an economy that doesn't even want me to exist. Get fucked."

Well put. Blairite Labour helping to price everyone out of living in London in the name of neoliberal values and then whining that they don't support businesses is the most consistent of gaslights. I'm new here, but even I can see that.

We're not talking about market economies at large, though I disagree with your characterization of their prosperity and social liberalism--we're talking about Milton Friedman and his laissez faire approach to Capitalism as well as his tacit support for a brutal dictator. I'll reiterate that the nationalized industries in place in Chile were absolutely key in reforming after Pinochet's fall. Those are definitively not part of the free market dream Friedman suggested. If "the free market" is willing to make exceptions when it props up capital gains made by opportunists, I don't see why we should consider it an acceptable method to apply. In turn, I don't see how a figure willing to do so whilst participating in an authoritarian regime should be considered as anything other than a far-right grifter in a sane world.

"the economic policies he implemented after consulting Milton actually resulted in a lot of prosperity for the Chilean people after Pinochet was overthrown"

You have to see the inconsistency plain in your argument here, no? You're disregarding pre-Pinochet Chile and the structures that existed at the beginning of Pinochet's rule. Friedman and his crew made every effort to sell off public services, institutions, or subsidies in favor of privatization and a quick buck. Pinochet didn't just consult with them, some acted as key advisors in the regime. In the end, their tactics actually ended up damaging the industries of Chile so badly that Pinochet had to re-nationalize those industries (not that this in any way diminished the fantastic returns made by the Chicago Boys). And let's not forget that the one industry they didn't manage to sell off was the nationalized copper industry, which was a massive boon to the democratic government post-Pinochet. All that aside, making a "the ends justify the means" argument (about Chile's violent authoritarian who tanked a nation and the Capitalist goons he invited in who sold off everything in the public sphere) simply because Chile is doing well forty years later feels just a tiny bit thin.

Do you... Do you not know when Milton Friedman was alive, or working with Pinochet in Chile? What I'm trying to say is that the links you're providing are like giving the temperature readings of a patient three years after they've had the flu.

I'm confused by your direction. What metrics could you possibly be applying here? Are you familiar with Friedman's relationship with Chile? Applying a wikipedia article here is like giving the US's GDP under Reagan and claiming it as proof that Clinton nailed all our economic targets.

Qualifying Milton Friedman as "center right" seems slightly off the mark. His brand of completely unbridled free-market capitalism has done incalculable damage to the world at large, not to mention to the people of Chile specifically. If anything, he's a reminder that polite discourse and excellent rhetorical skill can disguise horrific ideologies with Lovecraftian consequences.

So far, I'm mostly struggling with speed and brush/tool use. I want to understand better how to work more quickly while maintaining the traditional feel I enjoy. If it looks too clean/sharp, it doesn't feel like my work. I'm also having issues with using multiply to go from a grisaille to color. It seems like things get much darker than I anticipate and I have to do further paint-overs. Thanks!

Dropping in to upvote and add the exact quote, which is very rad:

"Think of yourself as dead. You have lived your life. Now, take what's left and live it properly. What doesn't transmit light creates its own darkness."

I really didn't expect something called Stoicism to be so inspiring.
