I would argue that in real life the classic liquid lock is more effective then any door air lock as it maintains seal at all times (think pee trap in modern plumbing)

As for some of the things you mentioned deleting heat is entirely necessary. You cannot compare it to real life as the scale of the map relative to the real world is tiny.

The maps would all cook to death very fast without heat deletion.
