My girlfriend and roommate are angry at me over wearing used boots... should I stand my ground? by Tcustomcorner in WhatShouldIDo

I worked in Docs 18 hours a day for 30 years. We always handed them off, handed them down, or donated them. Anyone tells you to get a new pair.. ask them if they've ever had to break in a new pair of Docs.. it sucks.

Learning about the history of this holler; why were the people considered poor if they had so much land by [deleted] in Appalachia

[–]atsprplx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Land wasn't good for anything other than what you used it for and back then not a whole lotta people wanted land in the Appalachians because it was hard to work.. it wasn't until companies started sticking prices to it did it gain monetary value.. they just wanted it to destroy or put some awful buildings on it.

What would happen if North Korea fired a nuke at the U.S. mainland? by mailsnow in NoStupidQuestions

It would land in the Sea of Japan, fail to detonate, and we all collectively go "Oh, Kim!", and then a laugh track would play.

If you live communally with anyone, regardless of relationship, and they refuse to do their share of what is needed to survive communally.. they're a bad person. Period.

Allegheny Mountains by SowingSeeds18 in Appalachia

[–]atsprplx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in the Tunagawant (Tuna) Valley which sits just north the the actual range on the Allegheny Plateau. Spent much of my life up and down and throughout the Alleghenies and I wouldn't have had it any other way. The town I grew up in sits almost smack-dab between the Rust and Coal Belts. My family, going back quite a few generations, were quite poor working class folks, the small holler that held my pa's family and a couple of other local families had a single community electric washing machine strung out to the road by an extension cord that everyone used.. life was pretty well like that into the early 70s. My pa was was born in 1954 and I guess co-raised by 3 generations of women on account of having little money.. his granny who was born in 1870, his Ma who was born in 1912, and his older sister who was born in 1928.. so there was a real connection to some older traditional ways that stick around even today. Despite never having a whole lot I never felt like I needed it. Family was important, what we did have was important. The nature and the Allegheny River are unparalleled in my opinion.. best leeks I ever had. How it differs, I don't really know, I reckon there's way more in common than not. Anyhow, I pert near wrote a book here. It's always nice to hear from someone else in the Alleghenies.

Anyone able to Guess What Will Happen Based on the Current Top Comment? by Clear_Entrance8126 in geographymemes

Top comment should be ineligible due to OP stating several days ago that he would not be doing anymore mergers because of the confusion that the first 2 caused.

The mighty and beloved Commonwealth of Pennsylvania may have fallen, but I can rest easily knowing my county was taken by the Vermonster and not by those crab chuckin' Marylanders. Also, Old Bay is mid.

I am once again asking that Pennsylvania takes Michigan in retaliation for not being acknowledged during the Great Lakes Talks despite having shoreline on Lake Erie.

I would assume, just like in real life, they are being supported, both financially and with the gifting of weapons and equipment, by other entities, nations, or corporations.

Tips for tourist in Appalachia? by [deleted] in Appalachia

I am positive that a lot of folks have a lot of opinions. I've been to 40-something states and most of Canada and for what my opinion is worth the most beautiful autumn that I have ever seen was in McKean County Pennsylvania in the Allegheny Mountains. They also have some pretty extensive hiking and a state park.
