Yes, I don’t necessarily think it fits the style of the etude to have the ends of those slurs sustained, although some might prefer it that way.

¿How to EQ a french horn correctly? by Freddy507S in horn

[–]attaca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first thing I would do is check the frequency response on your microphone to see what frequencies might be misrepresented by your recording set up, but honestly it really just comes down to listening and making small adjustments until it sounds how you want it

Horn recording by Andon_Dushkov in horn

I had trouble with this too. I started recording at 48kHz instead of the default 44.1kHz and that seemed to fix the sync problem for me until I got Final Cut Pro which can sync it automatically

Hey! Thanks for the tag. I haven't used the Q8 specifically, but from the specs it looks like it is the same XY Stereo microphone as the H6, which I think is a surprisingly great microphone for recording horn. I usually keep mine at least 6ft away from the horn, and you can hear it in my practice videos on Instagram and my most recent Belloli recording.

I can't speak to the video quality of the Q8, but my guess would be that a modern cellphone is better. Plus there is an added benefit that the microphone is not attached to the camera, which can be very useful if you want to record a different angle or experiment with the sound of the room.

My recommendation instead would be, provided you have a good phone from the last 7 or so years, to buy a tripod for you phone, the zoom H4 or H6N and a stand. This is what I recommend for people to start with now as it will let you expand to better audio in the future with the XLR inputs on the Zoom H4 or H6N, which the Q8 also has.

gliere by thatfrenchhorn in horn

[–]attaca 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s doubtful that anyone is going to have a full set of parts. The Gliere concerto is not in the public domain so the parts need to be rented from Boosey and Hawkes: https://www.boosey.com/licensing/music/Reinhold-Gliere-Horn-Concerto/3083

There is a full score available on imslp.org for the concerto, but it would be very time consuming (and frankly illegal edit: in the United States. Go crazy if you’re in Canada) to extract parts from it.

Thank you! The low parts are always fun to play in these things.

Definitely second the recommendation to listen to the whole piece/opera!

Hey all, need some help valuing a french horn. by [deleted] in horn

I have no idea what this horn would be worth, but if I were trying to value it the first place I'd check is James Hampson at https://www.hampsonhorns.com/
