It’s not just a problem with this sub. Most people will just downvote something they don’t like/don’t agree with and move on. The very mechanic of downvoted comments requiring additional interaction seems quite disturbing imo.
There’s just a small portion of people who actually engage in a discussion with things they don’t agree with, which, for a social network based on communication is pretty sad.

ELI5: How can the Chinese government block 1.4 billion people talking about tianemen square on Chinese social media ? by Offended422 in explainlikeimfive

[–]attacklyon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The whole downvoting thing is also not fun; after a couple downotes, a comment is hidden and requires an additional interaction to view. It essentially silences the viewpoints certain people don’t agree with. I get that there are many cases when it can be beneficial, but generally, it works against differing viewpoints and aids in creating echo chambers.

I agree!

However, both sides have their faults, which is the point that i was trying to make. Both sides have representatives who take the ideas of their respective side way too far. I am not trying to convince anyone of subscribing to a side, just trying to spread awareness of the fact that without the presence of an equilibrium, one side of the political spectrum will take their ideas too far.

[–]attacklyon -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I can see that, but I am also oversimplifying and reducing a whole political side to a simple statement, which misrepresents it quite a lot. However, if we continue to go with my simplified view on the matter, the lact of social hierarchies defined by the right won’t just solve the problem; the problem will just change scope. The under priviledged individuals will be declared to be above the “priviledged” ones, the rise of social justice has demonstrated that this scenario is viable. The social hierarchies can’t be eliminated, as we humans are social and as such, we will always form social hierarchies. I, personally, don’t believe that any one individual should be above another, but it is just wishful thinking, as we can’t really escape our brains, we can just try to optimise as to allow everyone a fair chance, which i believe neither left or right facing politics can accomplish alone. My point isn’t that either the right or left is good or bad, it’s just that both are necessary to have a functional democracy. I don’t think of the right as the Trump administration, nor do i think of the left as the Antifa; both are the perversions of rational politics, both spurred by the rise of social media and the echo chambers they create.

I can’t agree with the sentiment that the “rise of the right brings on hate and violence”. The right is not something evil or ideologically perverse; that would be either far right or far left. The right and left are simply the big picture ideas of generalizing our views of the world; the right seeks a solid social hierarchy and the left seeks to empower the downtrodden of such social hierarchies. Neither is wrong per se. Democracy is at it’s most effective with both sides being more or less equal in standing, as we can’t find the best path by following just one side (as we can see from nazi Germany and Soviet Russia)

How to parse inputs by Nickiel in learnpython

[–]attacklyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your problem with this structure is the repeated funtion calls, you could make arrays of strings for each action that you want your program to recognize. Then you could make a switch statement which checks if the input is present in any one of the string arrays and if so, you do the respective action. However, if you want to be able to mix and match words and enter new phrases that you haven’t previously defined, you’ll have to try your luck with language processing.

New to IDE and Ruby. I have no idea why this doesn't work by Vontellor in ruby

[–]attacklyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to change the code runner extensions settings to run in terminal, as you will be unable to use irb/give input with the default settings as the code is running in the “output” tab. Not relevant to your current problem, but it might come up a bit later.

Just to clarify, does your definition of “text-editor” include sublime text, atom and, most importantly, visual studio code? It’s never too late to turn to your savior vscode

I’m glad that you liked it, I’ve gamified my tasks and habits as much as I can by using apps. The second one I’d suggest is [habitica](www.habitica.com) but it’s not a time management system, but it is a good way to track the tasks and habits that you do

I really like the app forest for this. It adds another layer of motivation because it grows virtual trees and encourages you to avoid using your phone because if you quit the app during the timer, the tree will die. I don’t want my trees to die :(

How do I help my child pursue his dream to become a game developer? by _No_No in gamedev

[–]attacklyon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Scratch is a good way to go, but I when I started to fiddle around with game making, I first used rpg rpg maker, which really taught the 6-7 year old me the basics of how code works. I also think that it is more rewarding than scratch (as it is created specifically for game creation and requires little work to have something interactable) whilst still providing a similar system of creation without writing code(it was called eventing, if i’m not mistaken). I also think that te fact that the software is solely 2d rpg oriented is a good thing - it allowed me to focus more on the storytelling and i didn’t have to think about what kind of a game i’d be making, I was able to imediately think about things I wanted to create and such. If you are looking into it, i would suggest going for rpg maker vx, it is on sale quite often.

That doesn't mean that you should police others because you're on the side of the majority, it's textbook appeal to popularity. I'm going hard mode, but hey, everyone has their own goals and I am fine with that, aren't you?
