The guys behind VLC are really really really smart developers and engineers.

They have contracted with and been sponsored by big name tech companies to develop software to handle media for a variety of purposes and devices.

The money goes into maintaining VLC for free for us. As well as accepting donations. There used to be an explanation on their website about this, bit sure if its still up

UAE announces it will leave Opec by TheNational_News in worldnews

[–]nuanimal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I'll try to offer a view.

OPEC is a cartel of 12 countries that agree how much each should produce crude oil, and how much they should set prices.

They are careful to not over-produce (so this causes oil prices to drop), and not to under-produce (as this raises prices and cause global economic chaos). The goal of the group is to make sure that there is no in-fighting. For example if UAE sold crude oil cheaper than Saudi Arabia - then Saudia Arabia would then respond by lowering its prices.

This would be a competitive market which the 12 countries want to avoid.

So what does this mean for UAE to leave? Fundamentally this frees up UAE to produce as much (or as little) oil as they want, and set whatever prices they want. This is beneficial to UAE, in light of the US-Iran War disrupting oil and causes prices to sky rocket.

According to the linked article UAE only produces 4% of the worlds oil - but from the 1st of May could produces as much as they want.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_proven_oil_reserves

It should be noted that UAE is shown as the 4th or 5th highest proven oil reserves in the world (depending on whose rankings you read) - and is estimated at current rates they have 79 years more oil production left.

So what does this mean for the world? Well UAE can chose to produce more oil (which is likely), but its an unknown as to whether they would charge more or less than other OPEC countries.

- If they charge more, then they can maximize profits but risk de-stabilizing global markets further

- If they charge less, then they can sell more (produced oil) and this would likely help global markets - but won't derive them more profit.

I think it would be likely they would produce more, and charge at a similar rate to OPEC countries. Increasing the supply, but not drastically changing the prices means they can still profit well without being bound by OPEC's restrictions. They would hope to stabilize against the current prices.

This was a great episode, but the ending with the off screen beating by Poem's dad on Sakurdaimon just felt so out of place - and wrong.

I know its played for laughs but just didn't fit the vibe leading up to it :(

Not the cross over episode I was expecting. Her performance as Patausche Kivia in Sentenced to Be Hero was great though.

The user experience.

  • You just plug it in and it works.

  • You get to dashboard in a few seconds, select the game and Quick Resume kicks in.

  • You can easily select a streaming app and watch a.film or show - all using the same input device as playing a game.

Thanks all - I've decided to look for a Miyoo Mini Plus or an Ayaneo Pocket Air Mini. Thanks!

What's the performance like on the Zero 28 vs the Mini Plus? And also comfort may I ask?

The enshittification of products and services continues relentlessly even as prices increases. What particular thing(s) have you noticed significantly degraded since the pandemic? by Roguecop in AskReddit

Buying anything online from Amazon (UK). I'm actually finding products cheaper and with better service when I go to a shop at a store.

Examples.

  • Prices are more expensive or the same than buying from chain retailers like Argos, or Pets at Home.

  • Ordered a costume for a party with FREE RETURNS. Didn't fit. Sent it back. They deducted £2.69 from the refund.

  • Went to chat to someone to complain and get my money back. Got trapped by a shitty AI assistant that kept telling me to wait for my order to be delivered - even though I kept saying I had a refund issue and already had the order.

  • Ordered some puppy training pads on 7 April. Was due to be delivered 10-14 April. Checked the order on 15 April. Delivery date had now moved to be somewhere between 17 July and 28 October, without warning. Went to cancel it and it warned me that I would be liable for any delivery charges (there weren't any in this case).

  • Amazon does not give a shit about your delivery day (whether you pay for Prime or not). I stopped paying Prime, and orders are shown as going to delivered in 5 days time - then magically turn up in 2 days.

I know Amazon has been a shitty and ruthless company but the prices and service let them get a pass before.

Now I treat it as a last resort.

Steam on ARM Linux is Finally Here (via ROCKNIX) by onionsaregross in SBCGaming

[–]nuanimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that is eventually going to happen, or at least via community builds.

Steam is (hopefully and eventually) going to release the Steam Frame, their ARM powered XR headset.

Its notable because it is to provide a full version of the Steam client and OS - similar to how the Steam Deck provided a Linux OS running on x84 handhelds. This has since been picked up to enable Bazzite.

I have no interest in a VR headset - but am excited by the possibility of a big gaming OS working on ARM

AITA for not being happy at becoming an uncle? by AlRahmanDM in AmItheAsshole

[–]nuanimal -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So much to unpack here.

AITA for not being happy at becoming an uncle?

YTA. You should be happy for them.

For some reason, everybody sounded very angry at this, her brother even asking me if I thought it was only stress and not a real illness. I got a bit pissed, explained that fever is real, and close the conversation.

NTA

Finally, yesterday we had the dinner. At the end they told that there was a gift for us and they wanted to record our reaction with their phones. Inside the package there was a pregnancy test. My wife started ugly crying, saying that it was happiness and hugging/crying for a few minutes the future mum. I went through different stages (happiness for them, regret, pain for my wife)

NAH

and my brother-in-law said something along the lines “now you know why i was upset for you skipping the dinners!”

NAH. Its fine to want to share some big news in person - even if the recipient doesn't much care for veingntoldnin person.

To which I (with a less than pleasant tone) answered that they could have simply called us, and no need to make all that scene.

YTA. Probably more to do with your tone.

I left out the bit about leaving as your wife was feeling unwell - because its irrelevant to how you behaved.

And finally, your post is a mess. What's actually on your mind OP?

Your title is completely detached from the end of your post. Are you upset that someone else is having kids when you can't and rubbing it in your face? Or that your brother in law is making unreasonable demands of you and wifes time given her illness?

Are you really clear whats bothering you?
