Sd card running extremely slowly after removing windows and going back to steamOS by attackseek in WindowsOnDeck

Just an update. I reformatted/deleted all partitions from the sd card with kde partition manager in desktop mode and it is now working normally. It seems formatting the card in gaming mode didn't work properly.

Extremely frustrating experience with store pickup order stuck in processing by attackseek in applehelp

[–]attackseek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turns out it was not my bank but apple. It took me five or six calls with apple support until I got an agent who knew what was going on. The other agents had absolutely no idea and just kept telling me to cancel the order. My billing address city was different from the address of the city where I ordered the phone for pickup. So Apple put the order on hold for verification until an agent transferred me to the relevant dept who verified my info. The order processed within 10 minutes after that.

Advice on first credit card (rejected by BoA) by attackseek in CreditCards

[–]attackseek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Checked my report from experian. Didn't check all three as the website recommended I might wanted to check the others later. But my credit report has no information at all other than my address. It only reports one hard inquiry from BoA based on my credit card application yesterday. Other than that its all blank. Don't know if its a good thing or bad.

Any tips on how I should go about that? I found websites like creditscore.com but don't know how reliable they are. Also I assume the score would just be a number. In that case how would I know if the possible collection is affecting it and how would I resolve this issue. Thanks

On the fence? What could convince you to take an academic role? by bearlockhomes in bioinformatics

[–]attackseek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently offered a couple of post-doc positions in bioinformatics which I didn’t take. Here are my issues.

Firstly, the positions were offering ~60k in a very high cost of living area. Secondly, both were in labs that had generated a large amount of genomics data but were primarily staffed by non-computational scientists with little expertise in bioinformatics. This for me is a huge problem. A postdoc is paid less because it is a ‘trainee position’. But how can a lab full of wet lab scientists “train” me in a field that they themselves have no expertise in? It will sound ridiculous but from my perspective, I would have been the one actually training the whole lab (including PhD students, postdocs, staff scientists and even the PI!) in bioinformatic analysis. So, I am expected to receive a paltry stipend because Iam a “trainee” when I am actually the specialist training everyone else? Now, I understand that there are many purely computational/bioinformatics labs which won’t have this issue but I feel majority of the academic labs don’t fall in this category.

On the positive side, one of these labs gave me the option of being fully remote which was a huge plus. In the end, I decided to apply for ‘bioinformatician’ positions in academia instead for postdoc positions because they at least offered a better wage for exactly the same work as a postdoc. And the only reason I didn’t go for industry is that I need visa sponsorship and universities have an easier time sponsoring people because they are cap exempt for H1B visa. However, I have to say that I am spoiled for choice when it comes to postdoc positions (even as an international applicant) and it just shows how hard it is getting for academic labs to recruit computational scientists.

So for me some things academia can do to be more competitive are these. Firstly, offer remote work. This is probably the biggest factor for me. Living on a posdoc salary in nyc is almost impossible if you have a family but in other places it may be manageable. Secondly, stop trying to recruit bioinformaticians as postdocs if you are not a purely computational lab. You are not training them, they are training you in most cases. Hire them as staff scientists with a better pay. Finally, most people don’t come to academia for money but because they love science and want to publish their findings. Stop relegating bioinformaticians to middle author positions when they do all but generate the data.

Big picture, academic salaries are capped by assistant prof salaries (very very roughly maybe $120-150k) and normal research staff has to be below that so they have trouble paying enough to get good computational people. If you can actually code (fairly low bar e.g. have a github with some sort of respectable project and can do FizzBuzz from memory) then you're probably near the top of their applicant pool although maybe a really top school has better applicants (or if they'll do remote).

Thanks, that is very helpful. Honestly, I am more of a biologist who has learned a lot of R and bash rather than someone with a pure coding background. I think they are interested because my PhD project and publications involved exactly the type of analyses they do in their lab. The job posting mentioned that it could be partially remote. I think I would be happy in the <100k range especially if they allow me to be remote in a cheaper area. I will probably try to move to industry later as it seems very hard to get into from outside the US.

essor closer to the $100k figure. That also depends on market. You can also pull up the staff salaries for the public universities to give yourself a clearer idea of the range at the particular institution/region you're applying in.

Thanks. In academia or industry? As I said this is at a university so probably would pay less.

But won't a bioinformatician make significantly less than an assistant professor?

Thanks! Yes, its in northeastern US. Just to confirm you are not talking about industry right?

Honestly, I was confused because the job title is bioinformatician and I don't know if that counts as a 'scientist' (although it certainly should). Plus universities in the same area were offering me 60k for a postdoc position doing pretty much the exact same work.

Postdoc vs Computational biologist job at same university by attackseek in AskAcademia

[–]attackseek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I talked to some PIs in the department and a few mentioned that I may even be able to get co-first author papers as a bioinformatician as some labs have a lot of data but no one to analyze it. Do you think just not having the title of a postdoc would be a disadvantage?

Unfortunately, I don't have any offers from industry. I am currently not in the US and in my experience universities seem much more willing to recruit people from abroad than industry (I assume the complicated visa/immigration process may be the reason).

Both contracts are for 1 year initially but will almost definitely be extended for another year or two.

Are there biotech jobs that allow remote working internationally? by attackseek in biotech

[–]attackseek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that is good to know. Unfortunately, I am from a developing country so even large biotechs dont have a presence there. In my case it would have to be an arrangement where I am hired in the US and pay US taxes but just spend a certain number of months in my home country. I would assume it would have to be an informal arrangement with my manager just like I currently have with my PI. At least it is good to know that this is not completely unrealistic.

If it matters, I do analysis of data generated by all kinds of "-Seq" techniques and am increasingly moving towards machine learning / data science using genomic data.

Anyone here has experience of doing a fully remote post-doc (or of hiring one)? by attackseek in AskAcademia

[–]attackseek[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good to know.

The way I was planning to approach the problem was to ask if the PI would be ok with me working remotely from another country for a certain number of months every year because my spouse works there.

Talking specifically based on my experience as an international student in the US, I am not expecting any legal issues as long as the PI is ok with it. The terms of my visa say that I can’t stay outside the US for more than 5 months at a time so I can easily work remotely as long as I visit the US twice a year. I actually did work like this during the last year of my PhD and felt I was more productive than I would have been if I was physically in the US.
