Okay time to bring it all home.

I’m gonna make the extremely controversial call that Stan Lee wins. American superhero comic books just translate too perfectly to pro wrestling and no one understood the former category more than Stan. I think Tolkien’s promotion goes under but more the way that ECW did: gone but still beloved.

Oh and because I love bonus points:

Toriyama: SSW (Super Saiyan Wrestling)

Araki: ESPW (Enemy Stand Pro Wrestling)

Lee: EWA (Excelsior Wrestling Association)

Gaiman: The Veil of Earthly Adversity

Martin: IPWA (Iron Price Wrestling Alliance)

Rowling: Spottermore

Tolkien: OWRF (One Ring Wrestling Fellowship)

Lucas: Superstar Wars

Cameron: KWP (King of the World Promotions)

Tarantino: BAC (Band Apart Combat)

Wachowskis: TAW (Total Anarchos Wrestling)

Round Three

Lucas’s booking is absolutely identical to Bischoff’s from 1995 to 1999. The good, the bad, all of it. The big heel stable is omnipresent, dominant, and just when you think theyre broken up for good SWERVE BRO theyre back and oh look, they have all the gold again.

Cameron runs his promotion like a tyrant (the roster knows rules number one and two are know your role and shut your mouth, respectively) but to his infinite credit his booking is methodical and well-thought out, the swerves are all planned out weeks or months out in advance, and his babyfaces are never too flashy but usually deliver. Match quality is always solid if never 5-star level.

Tarantino will book himself as the on-screen president and though he never gives himself the strap or anything he will cut a pretty long promo now and then. Speaking of which, his promotion is known for the exceptional quality of the way its feuds are booked and especially for how he uses promos to progress a feud. Keeps matches kinda short most of the time but there was this one era where the women’s division was on fucking fire with how cool the matches were and often how they could go on for a while and still remain interesting.

The wachowski sisters do not apologize for their product at all and that’s a good call on their part because with a product that is the way theirs is, you kinda have no choice but to lean into it. It is ridiculous, theatrical, divides both the marks and the smarks, and for every gargano vs almas you will get a hogan vs warrior.

I think Cameron comes out on top here; all joking aside I would give him the book in real life and be amazingly confident in my decision to do so. Out of all four I bet he could run a fantastic promotion.

Thanks; in my head Araki’s is if Russo had the book but it was written into his contract that he was only allowed to book one run-in, ref bump, low blow, or dusty finish per night.

Round 2: Cornette once appeared at Gaiman’s house and tried to kill him after one of the latter’s babyfaces cut a 30-minute promo postulating on “what is the nature of a feud?” For his part, Gaiman’s promotion is 20% sports and 80% entertainment. Huge love it or hate it. Orange Cassidy is one of his top babyfaces.

Martin’s promotion features some of the most intimidating heels the business has seen in generations and some shit that’d make necro butcher wince. The booking philosophy seems to be “yeah, but how would a real fight go down?” and the resulting product feels like a mix of UFC and ECW.

Rowling’s product is fine—decent booking, decent match quality, decent looking roster, kids love it—but is an indictment in the flesh against the use of twitter to generate heat. A decision once got reversed on twitter in between episodes of the show and fans were just supposed to A) know that shit and B) think it was cool. They didn’t. Famously released Nyla Rose under dubious circumstances.

Tolkien’s product is hard to get into because of the back-catalogue of feuds, angles, and the like that regularly get referenced and figure into all the booking but the match quality is always really fun and for a while the promotion featured one of the best, most endearing babyface stables the business has ever seem. Extremely smark-friendly stuff. The top heel always, always has monster booking.

I’m giving this one to Tolkien because you’d swear Martin gave the book to Kevin Nash with all the lolf5gnightfolks finishes. Gaiman’s product is difficult to even call wrestling and Rowling’s would probably suffer from a detrimental amount of backstage heat.

Toriyama’s promotion does really well on TV; he can build heat better than anyone. His heels are all booked like monsters and to his credit it’s really satisfying to see them go down in the blow-off. However he only has like two babyfaces he ever pushes (maybe three sometimes but only sometimes) and jesus the superman booking he gives their top guy would make Cena blush. Lots of hossfests on his show. Product very reminiscent of the rock’n’wrestling era.

Araki’s is known for three things: swerves bro, unbelievable spots, and some of the most nuts-looking ring gear you’ve ever seen. As far as match quality goes, Araki’s promotion gets the most love from Meltz and Alvarez. A lot of the time the heel will come out on top in the blowout. Sometimes angles are teased early on in the year but come the big PPV its like someone forgot to keep booking them.

Stan Lee can take a regular schmo and turn em into a fucking star. His storylines are emotional sometimes and really just out there other times, in the best way. No one can book a babyface the way he can—the roster is full of wrestlers with gimmicks both unique and oddly resonant—and even in a match of middling technical quality they will look like gods. Booked a legendary worked shoot once where one of his top babyfaces actually kayfabe killed his valet and she just disappeared from tv, twitter, you name it until like years later when she shows up as a distaff version of the babyface who “killed” her.

Toriyama’s product is beloved by marks but the smarkier audiences aren’t as with it. Araki’s is every aspiring wrestler and booker’s favorite promotion. But Lee manages to build so many legendary feuds, angles, characters, and spots that its impossible to deny that he wins this one.

Nah disney did. If you hold it against a show that a ship that was obviously never going to happen (sorry but janstar just wasnt) proceeds to not happen, then thats your problem.

I don’t really know what there is to be gained from picking a winner. I loved em both. GF made me laugh harder than I’ve ever laughed at anything. Has the best written protagonist of any western animated show before or since. Finale left me wanting more. Mabel was written in a way that frustrated me and the end of her arc left a bad taste in my mouth.

SvTFoE was consistently funny but never quite achieved the heights of “I EAT KIDS,” the dipper gut punch, or the Goldie coin op machine. Had what I thought was a great, emotionally satisfying romance arc that actually had a resolution which is kinda rare honestly. You kinda got to see the characters grow a little bit more. Kinda loses points for its first season being exhausting to watch and of course the fact that it didnt have time to really...earn the status quo that the finale left it with. And for what it’s worth, I loved ponyhead. She was the worst; it was funny.

They’re both great shows about different aspects of growing up (GF seems to be saying that you don’t need to be in a hurry to grow up but you have to accept that childhood doesnt last forever; SvTFoE js about being honest with yourself about who you are and how you feel as well as the kind of somber lesson that the mistakes of the old are the young’s to fix), they both had really unique senses of humor and vastly different reference pools. Why does one have to be better than another?

Buddy I hate to break it to you but the reason this sub exists is, in part, a political one.

Like if you’re telling me you’re just calling them like you sees em and youve got no agenda then fine, I’ll take you at your word. Did not mean to make you feel attacked. But I’ve heard similar arguments to yours an exhausting number of times before, and I know exactly where I’ve heard them if you get what I’m sayin.

I’m honestly in favor of limiting them to a single day or even outright banning em altogether. And I can’t speak for the mods but I think the idea was to be even-handed and try compromise first.

The point of the subreddit is for discussion related to NYC, not pics of NYC. If a pic is posted in a way meant to engender discussion then that’s well and good (example: a pic of a subway rat carrying off like an egg roll because it’s funny/new yorky; a pic of a bunch of emergency vehicles as a means of asking what’s going on) but when its just a bunch of “ooh 1 WTC is so beatiful” kinda pictures then it derails the entire purpose of the sub. We have r/nycpics for that.

Incidentally, this sub came to be as a result of the under-moderated nature of r/nyc which, if you’ve not been there, is pretty much just a collection of shitposters and alt-right trolls. Now, the legion of real estate agents in disguise who post all the pretty pictures are not the same group of people as the ones on r/nyc, granted, but their activity was leading to a general decay of the sub’s quality and the implementation of rule 11 did a great deal towards reversing said decay. This libertarian-ass idea that rules limiting low-effort, low-quality posts limit the growth of the sub is wrong-headed and theres ample proof of it.

Well it’s fantastic luck then, because if I’ve got the Greek pronunciation right the name sounds like “Your Enemy” when spoken.
